96 TRD Supercharged 4Runner w/ high miles...

...no worries or run away screaming?

I'm looking for a fun but somewhat practical daily driver. There is a '96 4Runner for sale close by that is advertised as a factory TRD supercharger w/ 237,000 on the vehicle and 100,000 on a rebuilt motor. Is the high mileage just asking for trouble with the blower? Would I be nickled and dimed to death? Or is it worth a look?

It depends how well it was maintained. I have no concerns daily driving my 98 with 198K on it.. I had the Supercharger installed at 11K miles and had it rebuilt (as recommended) after 100K miles. My truck still makes lots of power, burns zero oil and is still a blast to drive! Good luck

Jeff

Thanks for the input. Sounds like it's at least worth a call.

Got a fair amount of miles on mine as well and no problems at all with the engine.

For the right price it is worth a look for sure.

Keep us posted...

See if you can find out:

** If the Supercharger was rebuilt at same time as engine.. if not, how many miles are on it...

Pretty clean for the miles. He's asking $4800, but I think I can get it for less. No odd noises but noticeable whine under acceleration. I think I am going to go for it. It is bone stock, looks like all it ever did was get driven.

Not trying to be a jerk, but the whine is probably the supercharger supercharging...

Uh yea, I do realize that. It was just an observation since I've never even ridden in one of these with a supercharger before.

So what does it take to clear 285's on one of these?

OK, I went a test drove it again today (this time with plates on it so I could go further), and I don't think the whine is boost related. It sounds like bearing noise to me, but I'll let the experts decide.

It runs and drives well. Started right up cold with no hesitation or odd behavior. The off-idle throttle response is impressive. The shifting, both up and down seems crisp to me, surprising for the miles. Engine oil and tranny fluid both look excellent, but both were changed about 250 miles ago.

Yep, normal supercharger whine 100% unless there is something else we are not hearing in that video.

I love good supercharger while. Does it have a deckplate mod? It is pretty loud for a stock airbox, mines not even that loud.

No mods at all that I can see. It looks like other than maintenance and wear items, nothing has ever been done to this thing.

Well, I brought it home this afternoon. Gave $4K for it. Now it begins, already looking at wheels and tires for it. Mild lifts and other accessory type stuff.

Good buy for that price, you will enjoy it!

If you don't know when the supercharger was rebuilt I would have it done, worth it now to save you problems later.

Also need to get some fuel mods to keep things happy, meth injection is another very good mod if you are looking or things to buy.

Thanks, I thought so too.

The water/meth is really intriguing to me. I'm not real excited about major fuel mods, but if the water/meth would do what I need it to as far as keeping the motor alive, I would be real interested in pursuing that option. Maybe for my '05 6.0PSD as well.

I really want this thing to be a reliable DD, able to pull my 14' ATV trailer on short trips, and, in time, be a vehicle that I can jump in and drive to Denver or Vegas without a second thought. And if it would get 18-20 mpg while doing most of that, I'll be tickled pink.

Edit: just ran out to the shooting range in the new 'runner. Totally happy with being able to carry everything inside instead of putting it in the bed of the truck.

Check out my videos for more info on the water/meth. Link in my sig.

I get high teens MPG beating the heck out of my truck. If i drive it normally I can get low 20's.
