I'm thinking that I would like to fix the body rot on the bed of my '85 truck. Does anyone know of places that sell patch panels for our trucks? I know where to find Ford or Chevy panels, but I've never seen Toyota panels.

 

You can get fiberglass for a little more, or hit up a junkyard.

There are also a ton of aftermarket dealers out there that probably have some.

I've used www.carpartswholesale.com with good success in the past - not for body panels, but a ton of other body parts (bumper, grille, valence...).

if purchace is over 200.00 . then all you have to do is supply us with your SS# . We do ALL the paperwork on your behalf . how hard is that ?

Thanks for all the info. The cancer spot on the drivers side in front of the rear wheel is a real eye sore.

There is a company that can reproduce them, but they need original panels.

 

toyotafiberglass.com is what I used on my 4runner and I'm glad I did. Well made and heavy duty. Easy to install also.

 

This is what I need to fix:

 

thats the most common rust spot on that bodystyle of truck.
fiberglass bedsides
replacement sheetmetal
or fiberglass bondo.

obviously fiberglass bedsides eliminate the problem completely, and new sheetmetal will eliminate the problem for a while, but fiberglass-bondo is the cheapest and lasts a few years..

 

yes .. this is the most common place for rust , and there is a reason .

bed sides on these years are NOT just a "skin" , they are actually incorporated into the floor and wheel well .
as a "factory" replacement part , the bed side was a complete side , including wheel well and 1/3 of the bed floor .

Here is why the "seam" always rusts ..
first- we have a floor
second- we have the bed side folded/bent and spot welded to the floor
third-a lower skirt spot welded to the above
I think there is a 4th layer in there as well , but I just cant think of it at the moment

with just a simple seam seal on the outer seam .. years of use will soon seperate the seal (nevermind the back side which was never sealed)
beds from 79-88 we ALL built in the same fassion , thats why they all rust , Cali folk have been blessed with the dry weather , but , in any "normal" climate .. the stock beds will rust , just a matter of time .

there is NO replacement sheet metal I would use in my shop , it's garbage .. might just as well get some 20G steel and make your own , and even the fiberglass sides , well I wont install them and we build them !! , I dont think its a "quality" repair either , but just a bandaid .. Our complete Box is what I would recommend ..

I think it all comes down to ... what do you want? quality repair , or bondo ?
