Engine WHINE.....

Couple things.
1987 pickup 22r rn63
1. I got this engine whine, goes along with the rpm's on the engine. got any ideas where to start? I replaced the belt thinking that was it and it got worse!
2. Going to replace valve cover gasket in the morning, Is there anything special I should know?
3. this is a long shot but, My wiper switch handle has broken out and I cannot find a replacement. I am 2+ hours from anywhere and the local parts store says the part is obsolete meaning they don't make it anymore I guess. Do you guys have any ideas of anywhere online I could get one and what it would be called. I don't know if it includes the head light switch too?

Thanks for the help!
Woody

Don't know about #1 or #3, but re. the valve cover gasket....
See if you can get a rubber Felpro set. It comes with the 1/2 moon cam shaft seals, and rubber washers, too. Be sure and change both of those, too!

No gasket sealer if you use the rubber kit....if it's a 'paper-type' gasket, then go ahead and use the RTV. The rubber one goes into the valve cover "thin side first", into the slot....

If the gasket's never been changed before, watch for the washers on the 4 studs to be threaded....grab 'em with visegrips and spin them off! The new ones shouldn't be threaded...don't over-tighten the nuts, just nice and firm. Tighten in a diamond-like pattern.
Label all the vacuum hoses etc. before you take them off (tape on hose and also on where it goes).
The Haynes manual, or FSM, should help, too! You oughtta have the Haynes/Chilton book...
Hope that helps!

when you pulled your belt did you try to move any of the pully's by hand? if not doing so would help you at least limit things down. something may just have a bad bearing, I had 89 p/u with a 22re that did the same thing you are describing and it was a bad idler pully bearing.

No I didn't but I will just pull the belt and check it out. I don't have an idler pully on this one, just straight alt->waterpump->crank.

Thanks

Ebay or bone yard for your wiper switch. Usually run about $40.

Waterpump or Alternator probably have bad bearings and are on their way out.
My guess is the water pump.

Got it changed in eh 45 mins, just tightened them till they stopped. there was only 2 vacuum hoses so that wasn't too bad either. Thanks for the advice!

Did it fix it? My first thought was pulley on belt of bearings on w-pump/alternator too. Curious to find out what fixes your problem.

I can't really tell, going to have to replace one piece at a time, alt, water pump, fan clutch. and see, prolly should anyway just to be safe.

It could be the bearing on the tensioner for the fan belt. I had a mysterious squeel for quite some time and all I had to do was take off the belt, take off the pulley, tap out the bearing from the pulley, and repack it with grease. Works like a champ now.

The problem with that is there is no tensioner, it is set by the alt mount. There is just one single belt on my truck

This may be a stupid question: How in the world do you only have 1 belt on a 22r? Mine has 3 including the AC.
