Finding #1 TDC without a timing chain

I'm replacing the timing chain and cover on my 1984 2WD 22R engine. When I was removing the old timing chain, I messed with the crank/crank pulley, and may have turned it 360 degrees and then back. But I'm not sure so I need to know how to determine if the crankshaft is set at #1 TDC or #3 TDC, without having a timing chain in place. The cam wasn't moved, and is set at #1 TDC.

The angle of the spark plug is pretty shallow, so it's hard to put a screwdriver in the #1 hole to check for TDC. Is there a good way to go about doing this? Since I have the oil pan off, can I measure how far up the #1 rod is and compare this to how far up the #3 rod is? Any other suggestions...

Here is a link to a site that explains it.

You should be able to take a flash light and shine it in the spark plug hole and watch the piston as it is moving up and down. That is how I did mine. I do not trust putting something on top of the piston, something will happen thats just my luck. Set it at TDC on the up stroke.

Usually the crank keyway is 12 o'clock straight up and down to the engine centerline on most engines. "Slightly important".

x2^^
If you were on TDC before you started and your cam is still in the compression position for cyl.#1 this should work. Then follow the instructions for lining up the marks on the gears with the shinny chain links. Don't force it, because I think that this is a zero tolerance motor and valves can be damaged.

Looking from underneath the engine, oil pan is off, the #1 & #4 rods are up (#1 up the furthest), and #2 and #3 are down. Would this be a good way to confirm #1 is at TDC if the crank keys(and crank pulley mark) are pointing up?

I've got the timing chain installed and I want to check that everything is set correctly. I've rotated the engine through two 360 revolutions, and was expecting all the marks to show up exactly as they were before I started the rotation. But they didn't. Now I'm worried that I do have something set incorrectly. Is two 360 degree rotations right, I also tried 4 rotations but also with nothing lining up. Do I need to go 8 rotations, or is something obviously wrong?

I'm rotating the engine with the spark plugs out, and it's been smooth...would I feel it if a piston was hitting a valve?

yeah you would definatly feel the piston hitting the valve, and as long as ur at TDC and your cam mark is allmost 12 o clock your good,

I said it was turning smooth, but I do feel what I think is compression resistance at certain points. If the piston was hitting the valve, would it stop the rotation, and make some kind of noise, or would it just be a resistance as it passed (and the valve bent???)...

#1 valve rockers will be loose. assuming the head is on and the cam is "close" If the head and timing chain is not on, it doesn't matter.
