I picked up a "new" truck. It's a 1991 4x4 v6 with 166k miles on it. The last timing belt was done at 96k and since i had to remove the intake and idler pulley to cure a broken knock sensor wire, I'm going to do the timing belt and associated parts while i'm in there.

New belt, water pump, idler pulleys, tension spring, cam and crank seal etc.

I don't like crappy parts. I don't like taking my truck apart constantly. I want to do the job once and get it done right. All of this points me toward buying the individual parts from a dealership online but before I do so, I'm wondering if there are kits that you all have EXPERIENCE with that you'd trust for quality parts.

I did a search and I've found some that claim to be "high quality" or OEM but I'd like to hear from people who have actually purchased the parts and felt them in their hands and can confirm that they are as good or better than the ones i'll get from the dealer (but less expensive).

 

Id stick with OEM on those parts but thats just me. You can order online through some dealerships and its usually alot cheaper than ordering it through them at the parts desk

Edit: I have about 20k on my Napa timing belt/idlers and water pump. Never had a bad experience with Napa.

 

i would stick with OEM. i done a ton of tbelts and OEM is the best for convenience and you will know it will work. since you tearing down that far. be a good idea to check your valves

 

You might also check rockauto.com, they have good prices. I bought an Aisin water pump from them for about $40, way less than the dealer for the same thing. Also, Gates makes a good timing belt kit with the belt and idlers, that costs around $100 the last time I checked.

I used the Gates idler pulleys but a Toyota timing belt. To my surprise, the Gates belt that came with the kit also has the marks on it for lining everything up and Gates belts are considered to be very good quality.

 

So I think I'll get most of the parts right from the dealer but the water pump retails for $180 and the online dealer has it for $90....but Rock Auto has the AISIN one for $43. Does anyone know if the one from Toyota is an AISIN one to begin with? Or is the AISIN one a decent pump?

 

Use the Gates Belts Timing Belt kit TCK240. its better than OEM quality and only about $200

 

My dealer told me the OEM water pump he sells is Aisin... as I said, way cheaper through rockauto.com for the same thing.

Also, the TCK240 timing component kit 94StealthRunner mentioned sells for $91.79 through rockauto.com.

 

I found Aisin water pumps. Is there any easy way to tell if you need one with oil cooler tube or not. I have a 92 V6 auto. Thanks

 

You should be able to simply look at your existing set up and tell. If you have an oil cooler, there will be a rubber hose coming from the water pump that gets routed beneath your oil filter and connects to the oil cooler which is bolted to the block on the (driver's) side behind the engine mount. The oil cooler is metal, roughly the shape of a hockey puck (but larger) and has two hoses connected to it, the one previously mentioned and another that goes back to a nipple on the side of the block.

 

i got mine from napa and it was awesome. koyo bearings same as toyota, toyota tensioner, and gmb wp. half the price of the dealer for the same parts, oh and it was a gates belt

 

Thanks for quick reply. It had just rained outside the other day and I thought that I would wait till everything dried up outside and look under truck. I have been under truck before removing oil-filter which is tricky to do.
