recently purchased my 1985 4runner, running and driving but needed brake line and had been sitting but in pretty good shape. solid floors and frame, mostly fender rust, anyways for $350 i said ill take it... i have new 33 inch tsl swampers id like to run under her.. any advice on a good affordable suspension and an affordable bumper for the front. also apparently 85 was the only year with both fuel injection and a solid front.. anyone have any additional info and whether or not this is a good toyota to start with? personally i really like it and it seems pretty tough but im not extremely familiar with toyota. lots of jeep and scout know how but im ready to go with the toyota this time. off topic but wow there is a ton of information on here really great for new toyota owners like myself

 

also on the look out for a land cruiser high pinion front if anyone knows of one for sale... i also found a parts truck just wanting to make sure im not getting ripped off.. factory hubs (in very nice shape) $20 a pair, ifs box (for x-over steer) $50, v6 third $25, and v6 calipers, driveshafts and some other stuff but theyre cheap enough im not gnna worry about...

 

Functionally 85s are the best. You're going to want to regear to 4.88s and possibly get a locker or 2. Scotty at addicted offroad makes some great tube bumpers if that's your thing. Lots of ways to go, just have a look through some build threads. OME makes a good small lift that will clear 33s no problem and you'll probably want to install a histeer kit with it. My build thread shows what you gotta do for the histeer/power steering if you don't already have it. Good luck and welcome to yotatech. Where's the pics?

 

Oh you might want to get a larger master cylinder to go with those v6 calipers, I've got the v6 calipers on my 81 and haven't swapped the master cylinder yet and the pedal takes a lot of effort to get any real braking power.

 

cool i was also thinking 4.88s and maybe just some aussie lockers. not really into the tube thing and i just finished my bumper today for the front, i might buy the rear it was fairly time consuming making the front the way i want it.. pics soon hopefully i need a new dig camera...ive got some used lift springs fairly sure there allpro but they need bushings... for the price i was thinking of the rough country three inch if i dont buy bushings for the ones i have now

 

Nice I run Aussies front and rear and 4.88s and no complaints. You an turn 33s and 35s but if you had 5.29s I think you couldn't run 33s on the freeway. I've got a 3 inch Downey lift I hate, rides like a pile, definitely replacing it when I get the funds. I am planning building some plate bumpers when I can get my hands on some decent priced steel. what year Land Cruiser do you want the High Pinion front end out of?

 

High pinions can be found in 91-97 Land Cruisers front ends. High pinion Elockers can be found in 93-97 Land Cruisers and LX450s

We also sell aftermarket High Pinion housings as well.

 

I'm running 33s with 5.29 gears and i can pull 60-65 mph at 3000 rpms on the freeway. As for the springs Allpro or trail-gear provide a very nice ride and are pretty reasonable on price.

 

Just curious if that's a true 65 MPH, or just on your speedo. I know that on 35s that really measure close to 36" inflated without weight on them that my speedometer is dead on. over my 33.2 mile commute, my trip reads within .1 miles and all those radar signs are matched to my speedo. On 33s I am off by about 7-10% if my speedo reads 33ish and I go past the radar it will tell me 30. Reflects about the same in the mileage vs google maps as well.
On the freeway, 35s I turn just about 2700 for 65mph in 5th. and 33s I turn just over 3000.
I know this is all mostly off topic, but based on my experience in a first gen pickup transmission gearing, I would not run 5.29s and 33s. I don't know if the transmission gearing is different by very much across the years or not.

No thats not from the speedo had a friend pace me on the freeway. i'm running swamper tsl 33s wich measure out to almost 34 inches. Just out of curiosity why wouldn't you run 5.29' with 33s behined a first gen trans?

 

because to get to 65 on the freeway I would be at more like 3650 rpms and it would destroy my mileage. I actually get the same mileage on 33s and 35s across flat ground. I just live in the mountains and the little extra hill torque is nice.

 

yeah thats true. but if your truck is not gona be a daily driver i would go with 5.29s
