1st Gen TRD Supercharger Rebuild

So I have a 1st gen trd supercharger on my 99 4runner that has way to many miles on it and has started to make a noise from the nose cone (sounds like a bad bearing). Ive read about a few different companies that rebuild them and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this. Thanks

Send it to http://www.magnusonproducts.com/, they rebuilt mine and were the cheapest a few years ago when i did it.

You need the bearings done and the only way to do those is with a shop press, so unless you have one and know how to use it, don't even try the DIY method.

Good luck.....
90% of those shops that will press the bearings in/out will A: not do it right and can ruin the bearings (seen it personally many times with other stuff, pressing bearings right is an art form, i know, i now have a press myself) B: if they can do it right charge you as much as magnuson.

I got quotes to have it done locally and of the shops i would have trusted to do it i think the cheapest was ~$150 for all 4 bearings after i talked them down in price (generally cost will range from $25 a bearing to $50 a bearing).

Magnuson charged me $300 for the complete rebuild including all parts. By the time i got all the parts, i would have spent at LEAST as much as doing it DIY without the warranty.

In fact pretty sure it worked out cheaper to send it to them, been a few years now. Also there was the problem of finding the right parts to rebuild it, there were lots of little differences in part numbers and it was hard to figure out exactly what you needed, sending it to them takes care of that, you know it is done right and you get a warranty with it. So even if it costs a little more it is worth it IMO and i am the king of DIY.

So as far as Magnuson goes you would go with them over PSE superchargers. I realize that magnuson is way cheaper, $300 vs $800. But PSE claims they "fully rebuild" the supercharger whatever that means.

I asked them about that but IIRC they said they could not get the roots for our supercharges (magnuson can BTW) so they just ended up charging you more for the same work. Plus magnuson CAN get the roots for a complete rebuild.

We have Eaton Superchargers, just the older gen 2 or 3 IIRC and put into a custom housing.

Call um up, they will tell you for sure.

Just for a follow up. I talked to Dave from Magnuson and he says that they do still rebuild TRD superchargers. He quoted me $980 for an entire rebuild claiming it would be basically new. Also, he said for what I think is a nose cone rebuild it would cost around $375. Pretty sure im going with the complete rebuild because my supercharger has around 180,000 miles on it. Ill let you guys know how it turns out

I have tried magnuson and pse superchargers and neither of them could fix the noise my blower is making. I spent more than the cost of a brand new unit and its still just as bad, if not worse. I took it apart and found out that either the rear bearings or the rotor pack wasnt replaced. I have sent it out 4 times, and Ed at PSE assured me that he installed a new rotor pack and bearings, but this is clearly not the case. I'm sad that I didnt just buy a brand spanking new unit now I just have peices of a supercharger sitting in my garage waiting for...well I dont want to spend any more money on the POS. It sucks that two companies would do this and not give a damn about the customer themselves, I feel completely cheated. I couldve rebuilt it myself better than these guys

I just purchased a TRD supercharger for my 2.7.

I needed to get the rotors recoated and the unit rebuilt.

While I've already come to a conclusion with LC Engineering and Magnuson to have my unit remanufactured, I did have a weird experience with PSE Superchargers.

Ed Martinez, the owner of PSE, was very... interesting. He told me that my supercharger rotors were actually coated in what's similar to spray paint, not a teflon coat. He then said that I would hardly lose any boost without said coating. He had me going for a bit... then he told me to contact Steve Millen of Stillen Performance.

A good 20 minutes speaking with Stillen... wow. They not only disagreed with everything said by PSE, but then actually mentioned that they'd never even heard of them. I was a little shocked... but it was sort of expected.

Anyway, long story short, I contacted LC Engineering, who know manufactures my supercharger model, who said that Magnuson will do my rebuild for the low price of $300, including all new bearings, seals, etc. They also offer a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty on their reman's.

normally, the do not do recoating and require that they replace the actual rotors ($700!). Thanks to LCE, they have gone up to bat for me and Magnuson will have my existing rotors recoated.

Talk about win... PSE kind of scares me, though, Ed told me that everyone I've asked about these units was dumb, though I've spoken to even the manufacturer of the units. It makes me really wary of how a company can have such a reputation... must be for Domestic blowers.

I'm finding myself in the shoes of a black TRD rebuild as well. FYI the sc is a M62 unit. I have contacted several places including Magnuson, PSE, Embree Specialty Machine, Stiegemeir, John Bond Performance and only 3 have responded so far.
Magnuson quoted me $1000 bucks for a rebuild and say they replace the rotors and not repair them.

PSE did not appease me at all. They are as of today 4/10/2012 3 weeks out. It would take more than a month for me to get my sc back and would cost too much. But good news! for an extra $100 a week that they are out they will bump your sc in line to get fixed. So an extra 300 for it to get fixed in the same week they get it. No thanks

Embree Specialty Machine quoted me 500 and some change for a full rebuild. But as I have a new nose cone kit with couple they'd knock down the price and for an extra 100 would recoat the rotors for me. I was also amazed at how much they know about our TRD units and told me it would take about 17 days for a full there and back trip. I feel most confident in them and will most likely send my sc there.

Stiegmeir and John Bond Performace have not responded to emails and messages.

Interesting. I'll have to check with those guys and see if they can figure out why my supercharger is making noise.

Thanks for the info

Not sure if you have seen this yet, but I found some pics of a gen2 nose getting rebuilt. Looks pretty simple.

If I can find the correct bearings and part numbers I will probably do my gen1 later this summer.

Well I dont' have a shop press. And i'd be very concerned about timing the rotors correctly. And I'm am not able to recoat the rotors. I'll rebuild the 3.4 blindfolded but if the supercharger comes apart its going into your motor. I'll let that be someone elses headache.

I also just got word from John Bond Performance and he has quoted me 400 to 500 depending on if the rotors and housing need to be reconditioned. He is currently 1 week behind and says about 2 weeks for the there and back once he gets the unit.
