Hi, I'm new to the toyota scene I have a 91 4x4 truck with a 22re engine, I was driving and got to a stop sign when I went to take off it started to spit and sputter, it died, got it started backed up back to my house and it died again, now it turns over but it wont start, i have spark, seems that i have fuel though im not completely sure, ive tried starting fluid, and that does nothing, I just got the truck back I borrowed it to a friend and when i checked the oil after it didnt start, it was empty, so i put some in, however the truck still is not starting, any ideas, where do i start, thanks.

Have you checked compression? How did you verify spark?

 

I have not checked compression, I'm going to try to do that today, what should it be? I checked spark by pulling the wires and watching them arc off a piece of metal

 

that's not a fool proof way of checking the spark.... the coil could be weak/marginal and arc with a small gap like that, but with low voltage... to test for spark and the coil strength properly, you need a spark tester tool

I don't know the compression specs, but if you post them it will be helpful for everyone to try to help you Regardless of the specs, consistent numbers across all cylinders is what you want

 

I know its not foolproof, but I know that I'm getting some sort of spark, even if it was weak wouldn't it at lest stumble a little bit? I couldn't hear the fuel pump turn on, I tried thd jump, which I'm not sure what that does but I'm guessing if start the fuel pump, I pulled the fuel line from the regulator( I know I could get gas everywhere) the fuel eventually started flowing but shouldn't it spray out with high pressure? All it did was slowly drizzle out, what I don't get is even if I wasn't getting gas shouldn't it stumble wither starting fluid? I took the intake tube off and sprayed it right in there, ill post the compression numbers after I check that, I know it doesn't mean a whole lot but, the engine itself has less than 60000 on it, whether it was taken care of by the previous owner , I don't know. This is my daily driver I really good to get if running again, I really appreciate all the help, you guys are great to share all your knowledge with people and that you just offer it, shows that we have some really decent people out there,

 

yes, it should shoot out when you pull the hose off... you might want to try this by having a friend turn the key to "ON" while you have the hose disconnected and pointed away from you/something.... if it doesn't do anything or trickles out, the fuel pump is more than likely bad

while it's not a great way to test fuel pressure, it is a way to see if your fuel pump is working or not, other than putting your ear to the gas tank (which is the other way to check this)... it is dangerous for sure, and there will be a lot of fuel coming out if the pump is working... so just beware of the dangers and not smoke or cause any sparks around leaked fuel! soak it up and let it dry before you do anything else!

 

x2 on the pump. Take the gas cap off and listen for the pump to come on while you have someone hit the switch.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember correctly, the pump doesn't turn on every time you turn the key, only when pressure is needed. Jumping the wires under the hood just makes the pump turn on every time the switch is turned on.

 

It could just be the strainer (I call it the sock) being stopped up.

 

Ok did a compression test all cylinders.seem to be about the same 140-150, pulled the lines from the tank did the fuel pump jump, lines trickled, could hear the pump humming, I'm not sure but I think its the pump, the fuel dont "spray" out again though shouldn't it stumble with starting fluid?

 

I guess you should get a spark tester next

Had low fuel pressure, changed fuel pump and filter, still will not start. Getting a code 21 and 43 now, any thoughts?

 

did you check your fuel pump relay?

 

I get fuel pressure at the rail when I turn it over, relay should be good.

 

Have you tried your Fuel Injectors?

 

well,was it really noisy when it shutoff???(no oil).fuel and fire are the key.if you have good fuel to the rail,and you have good spark to the plugs,im assuming you checked all four,quick check with a timing light ,turn it over,check each wire for consistant spark, i would go right to the the fuel injectors.go rent a noid light from your local parts store and see if you have a pulse at the injector connector,if so ,the only thing left is the injectors being dirty,bad,etc.if you dont get a pulse,youll have to start working up the wiring harness and look for corroded wires.
