Need a Thread for Recommended Mechanics/Shops

Hi guys,

We do our best to make sure our vehicles will not leave us stranded. However, s**t happens when we're far from home and away from our regular mechs.

It would be nice if we had a thread for recommended shops/mechanics who specialize on our 4Runners and Trucks in different areas. I searched but haven't found one. If one exists, pls bump or sticky it. Otherwise, I'll just start an new one.

Recommended minimum info to include:
  • Name of shop
  • Go to or stay away from?
  • Address
  • County/City and nearest freeway
  • Contact info
  • website if any

Example of actual recommendations from fellow YT member:

Japanese Auto Center - Recommended
Los Angeles near 405 & 110 Freeways
Address:
1846 Del Amo Blvd, Torrance, CA 90801, @ Western. Map here.
Contact info:
Service: 310-618-0777
Parts: 310-320-4352
Machine Shop: 310-320-3247
Fax: 310-320-3126
E-mail:jac90501@yahoo.com

Vellios Machine Shop - Stay away from (2 bad reports from YT members I've seen so far)
4625 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Lawndale, CA 90260

I'm in OC and just pulled my truck out of long term storage. It would be great to know of an honest and skilled shop around this area!

I'm also in OC and would like a mechanic who really knows the 22RE. I'm tired of telling autoshops things like "yes you have to adjust the valves hot, believe me" and other quotations from the FSM . . . You'd think with all the 25 year old yota landscaping trucks there'd be some super good shops.

Does any one have any experience with these guys:

Those guys seem to have 42 5/5 star reviews on Yelp. Looks like they only service Toyota/Lexus/Scion. I'm gonna give them a shot for my valve adjustment probably.

Ok guys I saw the bumps so I'll give an update. Word is the Toy Shop is good, but since they are little far for me (since I'm in South OC) I've been using these guys.

S&S Auto Service
23081 Orange Ave, Lake Forest, CA 92630

Not dedicated Toyota shop, but the the tech there, Chad, is very familiar with 22REs and 3VZEs. He has done great work on my truck using OEM or Denso parts, and they have a long warranty.
They are honest, prices are very fair. Tell their service writer Bo that Darrell referred you from Yotatech for a discount.

Here's the work they have done on my 92 22RE 4x4 without issues:
  • Timing chain, water pump
  • Valve adjust
  • Clutch, flywheel, main seal
  • Front Rotors (Brembo) with OEM pads, maintenancing my Aisin manual hubs
One thing. They do not work on carbureted engines so OC 22Rs should try the Toy Shop.
