About 2 weeks ago my trucks idle lowered itself by about 100-200 rpm. I could feel it, but it was barely noticable. It for the most part came back to normal. Keep in mind, this is a rebuilt motor with aboue 3000k on it. New everything, fuel pump, cap, rotor, plugs, blah blah.

The other night i swapped in my supra AFM. The idle now is at a little bit below 500, and its choppy as all hell. kind of pulsates. You can see the tach needle going up and down just a tinge. The car, once above 1000 rpm runs flawlessly. Feels much smoother, and just more happy.

My assumption is the more air being let in, affected the idle, but ive read a thousand writeups on this swap and never saw anything of this. Anyone have any ideas? I adjusted my throttle cable so my idle is higher for now, until i can find a route to this problem. Any ideas? AFM junk?

Look at my sig. Its an 88 22re pickup. only thing i left out was the fact that its a the 82 supra AFM, bolt in one, rather. part number 22250-43110.

 

How old is the fuel filter?
Why didn't you use the idle speed screw instead of the cable?
Are your plugs tight? Are they n.g.k. Or denso?
If the idle is surging it could be a vacuum leak also.

 

Fuel filter is brand new toyota OEM from the stealership. I had a adjustable in the truck, no screw driver at the time:temporary fix. All the plugs are new and tight, im unaware of what they are, but i got them at the stealership as well. I re-did ALL my vacuum lines, so im sort of ruling that out.

Keep in mind, this low idle started with the installation of the AFM from a supra.

 

did you unhook the battery for about 20 minutes to reset the ECU? i read somewhere you need to do that sometimes

 

Good call man. I only post here when i know im missing something, but im too busy to see it in the face. Plus, i must apologize for my vagueness. Im on a few forums, and i forget what i have on which one where. Unhook battery commencing now...

 

Did that work? Adjust the idle screw and check timing.

how do you like the new AFM compared to stock? any noticeable power gains or increased MPG?

 

So, i had a feeling it had to be a big leak...obviously. I looked at every damn hose and grommet one by one and finally found it. The crappy advance auto parts pcv grommit tore. It was still one piece but around the whole thing almost torn completely off. massive intake leak. Only thing i forgot to get from toyota when i bought all the parts, the pcv grommit. Go figure it was the only thing to screw me!

 

thats good to know. cheap parts have also cost me more in the end. hows the power in the rig with all your mods.? there are a lot of mixed emotions in the threads about "moding" the 22re.

 

Oh, i spent over 1500 at toyota rebuilding this motor... trust me i know.

And as for the rebuild, its been really cold here lately, and i get 17-18 at best, sometimes 19. I have 31" bfg at's, and stock 4.10s with a 5 speed. I contribute not so good mpg to the cam. I mean, the truck definately goes alot better, but i don't think it was worth it really. For the money i spent, i could have swapped in a 3.4, etc etc. I currently swapping a TDI into it, with the 40ish mpg i will get with it, i can make up money spent in a year of driving alone.
