big trip for me and 'ole bob

well people,

me and bob, '88 4runner, are taking our first BIG trip together.

unfortunately, it's not going to be along trails and back roads... but the urban jungle, freeways and city streets!

the total round trip will be approx. 225 miles.

starting from the easy goings of san marcos, ca up to pasadena, then down to lakewood, then down to westminster and then back home.

here's the most recent pic i have of bob with new shoes...

we've been to the beach in carlsbad for surf fishing and down to santee lakes for trout.

but nothing like this!!!!

here's wishing for an easy trip.

i will be cruising between 65mph and 70mph when i can and just enjoying the tunes from the scion head unit i got last year.

just wanted to share.

joel

i'm scared to take a big trip in my 4runner....if something goes wrong then it'll take a helluva long time for a friend or family member to get to me.

longest trip i ever WANT to take in my 4runner would prolly be MAYBE 1000 miles...

Enjoy it! Right after my divorce I took an 800 mile round trip in my 89 to go see a female friend back in Texas. Only issue was a spark plug wire that came off the dizzy (almost peed the seat when it happened). Got good millage and had a damn good weekend out in the hills around Alpine.

i'll be picking up a few items that i've acquired from different members on different forums - dash topper for ole bob, MREs and a bunch of bowling pins to shoot at

i wouldn't say i don't trust the 4runner... rather, i've not taken it out for a big trip.

it isn't my daily driver and ever since i've had it i only really get to drive it on the weekends and only around town.

so, i'm pretty excited.

gps - check
cell phone - check
AAA card - check

lol.

225 miles is nothing, that's not even a full tank of gas. I'm sure your runner will do fine, unless there's something you're not telling us. I drove my 1990 to colorado from mass in april and spent 9 months driving all over the rockies then back to mass, did 1100 miles the first day and it did fine.

update!

absolutely no issues other than a little road noise.

the new larger wheels and tires are throwing my speedo off but i expected that.

what's weird is that my speedo is slower than what my GPS was showing.

the 15" wheels with 30" tires i had previously were dead on with the GPS.

new tires are 16" from discount tire with used 265/70/16s from my wife's 2k 4runner.

now the GPS is showing that i'm actually going faster than my speedo.

so, speedo says 62mph - GPS says 65mph.

speedo says 66mph - GPS says 70mph.

other than that it was a great trip!!!

i've only had my 4runner running for about 4 months or so after the rebuild...so i haven't got 100% confidence with it yet lol

ah, i thought the speedo was going to read slower.

i got the 4runner in 2007 and it wasn't running... it had been sitting for at least 2 years.

something had blown up in the engine bay and there was rust colored gunk all over the place.

about 2/3 months later i brought it to a shop and the engine was toast, the fuel pump was dead, rust in the cylinders, etc etc...

after a lot of time and money the engine was replaced, fuel pump/filter replaced, clutch replaced, front/rear brakes replaced... and more.

it was running and passed smog but not the first time

ever since then it's been running great and i've taken trips here and there.

this was the first real long drive since i've owned it and it was great.

yea i've taken mine about 75miles round trip, and it's got over 1500 miles on the rebuild now....but i need to do my brakes (kinda jut want to freshen it all up, i have more than half the material left on the pads and shoes lmao) alignment, BJ's, U-Joints..just don't want something stupid and cheap to go out going down the road, and cause a BIIIGGGGGG problem...like a u-joint failing and blowing the transfercase in half (been there, done that....)
