fuel gauge sending unit question

If I were to use a fuel gauge sending unit from an 88 sr5, would it work in my 87?

it would depend on if the two trucks have the same size fuel tank i think. if they are, i dont see why it wouldnt work.

but someone who knows for sure will chime in soon.

88 is the 1st year of the 3.crap and it might be different.
I would think 22RE would be the same.

Yeah lol I'm sure of it, but I also thought about that. I hope they're the same size!

well I know it had a 3.0 motor, but would the gas tank really be a different size?

you can do a search on here,
i dont remember the thread exactly, but im pretty sure the 22re trucks had 2 or maybe even three different sized tanks.
so...my guess is that the v6 probably had the same options.

Side not for you. I used a sending unit from a 94 2wd in my 87 runner. Made a wiring adapter to the harness from the 94. All I did to get it close to the 87's reading was to bend the float arm. Not an exact match, but close enough to not run out of gas and basically free because I had it laying around.

it's not just the size of the tank, it's also the shape. Ext cab trucks were different then reg cabs. I think long vs short wheel bases might have been different too. Also the trucks with the low level fuel light had 3 wires and the one without had 2 wires.

Look on toyotapartszone.com get the part numbers for each of the trucks and see if they match. If they don't match it might work but may not be accurate.

what is wrong with yours?

Mine gets hazey after a half tank and drops at about a quater. I want to change it so I can know exactly how much gas I have without guessing.

They are diff like xxxtreme said. Long vs short 2wd vs 4x4 std vs ext look for a vehicle on here being parted out and get a pic and match the electrical connector

From: Bryan Tx,
The fuel tank in my 86 4runner was replaced by the PO with a new auto parts store tank. I know it is the smaller 14.8 gallon I think, even though it originally had the larger tank. He said the sending unit was rusted up so he threw it away and didn't bother putting a new one in so needless to say, I have no fuel gauge operation. What do you think about something like this?

The price is right thats for sure, just wondering if anybody has ever tried a universal type sending unit, or has any idea where I could find a decent price on a new or used Toyota unit.

I don't think any of the universal sending units work with the factory gauge as the resistance values are weird.
