So I've got the engine pulled on my 84 4runner 22r and I was wondering if I should do anything to the tranny before putting in my new engine? Replacing seals, bearings etc... whatever there is. Any input?

 

Only a few bolts hold that front bellhousing section on.. could take it off and clean it up via degreaser or hot tank. New throwout bearing is cheap and same with clutch fork boot. Marlin and I'm sure trail gear sell replacments. Is the tranny solid as far as shifting?? Manual trannys are easy to rebuild if u have access to a press. Just keep track of the spings and detent balls. But if the tranny doesn't have any issues ide just clean the bellhousing and slap it all back together. Gonna get dirty real fast anyway but nice to work with clean stuff.

 

What are you gonna do with the engine?

 

I got a rebuilt engine w/10k on it. It is a 22r/20r hybrid with most of the upgrades for it. I'll have to get a pic and show ya. I do have the old block and head that are just sitting there though.

It's been a while since I've driven it, but it seems to grind sometimes going into second gear from first. Didn't seem to be too much of a problem though.

Thanks for the info on the suggested parts to replace. I would assume that i'd have to drain all the oil to remove the bell housing. If someone could confirm that it'd be appreciated. I'll probably remove it since where it sits now I don't want to get all that grease/oil on the driveway. I'll probably just power wash it since that's the best thing I have for cleaning at the moment.

 

No u don't have to drain the oil the bellhousing is a seperate piece. Its like 6bolts or so to unbold from the main tranny housing. ill slap a pic up if I can for u but no fljuid would be lost from taking it off

I would assume there is a seal around the shaft where it enters the tranny. I should probably replace that while I've got it apart, what do ya think?

Guess I never saw that they came apart, maybe b/c they are covered in so much oil. lol

 

There is a seal behind the front cover. Marlin sells rebuild parts and seals. If u replace that ude get fluid coming out. If ur tranny has shifting issues ide say go for it and do a full tranny rebuild if not its just a day or two later on. you'll need a press if u want to fully rebuild on tho.

I'm having a hard time finding the throwout bearing online somewhere.

I want to get the throwout bearing, clutch fork boot, and an oem clutch. Just having a hard time finding the bearing. Any ideas?

 

The full "clutch kit" will have a new throw-out bearing in it.
