I just found a 93 automatic 4 runner im thinking about going to get tomorrow and I was wondering what it would take to put the 3.0 motor out of it and put it in my 94 3.0 4-runner which is a manual

Not all that familiar with the 3.0, but if the front accessory drive is the same on both years and the engine wiring(injectors etc.) are the same the only thing that you would have to do is install a pilot bearing in the back of the crank of the auto, remove the flex plate, spacers and engine backing plate from the auto and install the manual backing plate, the flywheel and the clutch and it should drop right in!

 

This sounds about right from what I remember when I did this project. Only other thing I can think of is you will have one coolant temp sensor on the water manifold (behind the intake) that will be unused with the manual transmission. Don't kill yourself looking for a wire that isn't there. That temp sender allows shifting into O/D (on the automatic)only after the engine is at operating temp if I remember correctly. You won't even have a wire for it.

 

ECU is different if I'm not mistaken.

 

well the first step should be a garage. proper tools, a decent digtial camrea. with pleanty of memory.. lots of zip lock bags.. label everything..

most of all is to have the people you care about the most their help you achive this goal.. wether they are just shoot the ˟˟˟˟, or just handing you tools and or take pictures.. the memories are where it counts after its all said and done..

 

ECU and associated auto wiring will stay in the donor truck, it doesn't enter the picture!
As I said before if the engine harness is not the same , the one from the auto will have to be replaced with the one from the manual! "PITA"

 

Thanks for all the input everybody ill definately stick with this project and try to write up a step by step in another thread unlike my 3.4 swap, the only question I guess I have is Hadmatt- I'm not all too familiar with the way 3.0s work but it wouldn't hurt anything to run the manual ecm on my truck with the donor automatic motor?

 

The only difference between the 3.0 auto and the 3.0 manual (forget the parts that you have to swap for a moment) is the computer that is sending operating perameters. Internally the two engines are exactly the same. When the engines come off of the assembly line, if you put a flexplate on one, it becomes an auto, if you install a pilot bearing and put a flywheel on another, it becomes a manual. That's not just for the 3.0 all engines are that way regardless of make. Having made that statement there are probably some specialized race engines (that you and I will never come across) that are specifically designed to have an auto or manual behind them!
It will work like it was meant to be there!
