I have searched this forum before I posted. Hope this is not a stupid question. I have an assumption that the pipe from the exhaust to the bottom of the EGR is clogged (being the valve itself was completely caked with carbon) but i am not able to get the bolt for the metal strap that holds the pipe to the back of the engine off.... any TIPS?

 

Is it striped? Just can't get at it?

I have it in the truck in my avatar. 1992 22re. I just cant get to it! I have also been reading other sites, god i hope its just this and not my intake ports.

 

When I removed my head, (22re) I got that danged pipe off, and I have gorilla hands. It was a Bear. Only later did I find out it was not necessary.

what have you taken off so far?

those pipes give very little wiggle room at all........discnnect on the exhaust side ( 2 spots) and intake side (2 spots) and i removed the head with it connected in 2 places on the back.

i rebuilt my stuff so i'm not sure why your's is blocked up but i would think that you could technically "clean it" in place, though i'm not sure what would have caused that and what else you should be doing in regards to that.

i have pics of the back of the head i will post if you need them to use to feel around to remove the pipes but as i remember, it's a very tight fit for your hand

 

to clear up some false information that I already see, the piping you see on the exhaust side has nothing to do with the EGR system; that is the piping for the PAIR system. The plumbing for the EGR system is built into the cylinder head itself, and the only "pipe" in the system come right off the head on the passenger side and goes strait up to the EGR valve

the exhaust gasses come directly from the exhaust ports on the head, and before they even leave the head they are directed to run right around the back of the and up that pipe on the passenger side to the EGR valve

holy , ya the pipe going from the exhaust to the intake is what im thinking was clogged with carbon. so your saying that's not it? wow, this helps a TON! I am throwing 71 egr code. I have cleaned all of the egr that i can easily unbolt from the truck with out taking off the intake. i guess thats the next step. every thing else is clean and the egr/vsv valves are working properly i have tested them. vacuum lines are all routed correctly. Any other input?

Maybe time to pull the plate on the back head and clean the egr port in it.

 

Do you have to disconnect the battery to clear the fault condition?

 

You do have to disconnet the battery or remove the fuse to clear the codes. If your EGR was clogged that bad, chances are alot of the ports to the plenum are clogged.

You can clean them on the truck, but if you have the time, I would pull the plenum and take the throttle body off and take it to a carwash and get it with high pressure.

I take a drill bit to the size of the metal pipes/ports and using my hands clean them with the drill bits. Some of that carbon is like concrete.

I can have it off and on in about an hour. But I have done this quite a few times. Might allow yourself a couple of hours.

Make a plate that can go between the plenum and the EGR connection. There is also a hose you can plug, but not sure which one it is. When inspection time comes you can just remove the plate.

ill keep my eye on this post as well, im rebuilding my engine and being as im in texas and smog laws are almost non existent, im going to make some egr block off plates and get rid of it. They dont work on semi trucks, they dont work on my truck.
