Just picked up a 94 Pickup 22re motor,5 speed, has about 270k on the body, engine was supposidly replaced with lower mileage one. I drove it home(about 30 miles) ran like crap no power going up hills but was fine cruising at highway speed. Ended up losing about 30mph pulling a hill and had to shift down to first and run about 4k rpms to make it. So i changed plugs, wires, cap/rotor, new fuel filter, and checked timing. Now it will start, idles a bit high, and whenever i give it gas it just dies right out and will stall, max rpm is about 1500 and it just sputters right out, doesnt always stall but will not go past 1500 rpms. Just looking for some help on this to get started, I'm thinking maybe fuel pump or tps? Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks

 

Check the TPS first, make sure its properly adjusted and that there are no dead spots, try unplugging it and see if that makes a difference.

 

i briefly unplugged tps while after finished the tuneup and stuff to no avail, Rpms jumped briefly but still same symptoms.

cel came on, did not pull dtc's to see what it was, i just unhooked the battery to reset pcm. I figured that way i'd have a fresh start as the light was on when i got it
will probably pull codes in the morning.

 

scanned for codes, had codes for air flow meter, tps, and o2 sensor, replaced the airflow meter and tps, reset and drove. Runs alot better but still crawls up hills, almost every time i pull up a steep hill i'm in first gear by the time i get to the top. So basically i have no low end torque, level ground and highways it is fine.. It is in desperate need of an exhaust,(leaks at flange below manifold and muffler is virtually no existant.) any other suggestions ?? i'm at a loss here, it's my first toyota i don't want to give up on it just yet.

 

Exhaust leaks, huh?... hhhmmm.... do you know if you've been losing coolant? i'm thinking along the lines of "leaks" causing your power loss, and higher mileage heads are prone to water jacket corrosion, and coolant seepage into the exhaust ports. Been there, doing that... Most common with engines that haven't been properly cared for, of course, such as using only water as coolant. Just my precious two cents.

 

- then again, a not tight exhaust will greatly affect your power, so the exhaust leaks you know you already got do need to be fixed. Thank you and yur welcome.

 

got the exhaust fixed, still relatively gutless, but now can pull hills in 2nd gear instead of first. still have to keep it about 3k rpms to get and decent power. CEL is on, still a code 27, nothing else stored, starts right up and runs ok.. just getting frustrated with it at this point. any other suggestions? (it is not leaking coolant)
