I've owned my 1990 4x4 since she was new. Up until a month ago she has "never ever " failed me. She don't owe me a thing! However she gets no spark out of the coil. So far I've changed cap,rotor,plugs,coil, igniter, MAS sensor and just had the ECU checked, which was OK. I checked continuity from ECU up to the ingniter and it's fine. I do get 12 volts up to it. Hope somebody can help me get her running again!

have you tried bypassing the ignition switch? That amounts to hot-wiring your car, so don't drive around like that lest you get pulled over, but looking at the starting system circuit in my FSM, if its not the ECM, igniter, coil, distributor, or plugs, that really leaves oly the spark plug wires and the ignition switch. Check the 30 amp AM2 fuse in your underhood fuse box and the main fusable link. If you have a multimeter, the maximum resistance in ignition cables is 25 k-ohms. Then turn on the ignition and check that there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive. The pickup coil should have a resistance of 185-275 ohms when cold on a 22re and (depending on model) between 125 and 250 ohms on the 3VZE. Good luck and keep us posted. Also, in the future, include a little more info on your specific model.

I checked the fuse under the hood-OK! I can't find a fusible link in my Chilton's wiring diagram. You did mention the switch which was going to be my next check. Fortunately, I don't mind replacing parts on my truck 'cause she's been very reliable. This is the first time in 20 years she gave me a problem and even at that she died in my driveway. Thanks for the com-back. I'm waiting for the ECU to come back and I will check the switch and let you know how I make out. By the way I also own a 2001 4-Runner which I have owned since new.

 

Firstly, Chilton's couldn't help you find your own elbow. Get the FSM, or factory service manual. Worth its weight in gold. the fusible link I am referring to is the wire between the fuse box and the battery. Hook up a multimeter between the positive terminal and any positive terminal in the fuse box and make sure you have full battery voltage at that point. Any more than .2 volt drop per connection, and you have a problem there. pins 7 and 8 on the ignition switch harness should have continuity on ON and START positions, sending power to the ignition. search for the FSM on this forum to see a diagram of which pins are which.

Got the ECU back and put it in. Checked the fusible link-OK. Pulled down covers to the ignition switch-WOW! I'm an old time mechanic, how the H--- does that come out? No numbers on the wire connector. Also couldn't find out how to find an FSM on the forum sight. Looks like I need to drop the steering column to get the switch out.
