Ok im lookin at doin a 5.29 gear change in my truck. i want a locker as well though. Marlin crawler has a deal with a powertrax locker in a 5.29 third member ready to drop in for 800 bucks. Would this be a good deal to use or should i go ahead an let the offroad shop do this job. By the way the offroad shop quoted about 1000 for one rear end alone with a powertrax. Lets hear it.

 

I'd do the marlin over the offroad shop.


1000 for a diff with a powertrax is rediculus.

300 for gears and install kit + 280? for locker + 75-200 for install

 

yeah thats what im leanin towards, do you think that it would be a real easy job. like a pull out my old gears an carrier and slide in the new and just bolt it up?

won't work. if you're changing gear ratios the pinion will still be for whatever gears you've got now, not for the 5.29s. even if it were the same gear ratio and you were swapping to a new ring gear with the old pinion, the contact pattern might not be good because they weren't setup together.

as for the MC product, that would be the easiest route because it's all ready to go and you don't have to supply your core and wait for them to set it up. and it's probably cheaper than having a shop do it unless they work for pennies/hr. another plus is you can sell your old diff and recoup some money for setting up the front.

as for your front IFS diff, you'll have to do something about that - either send it in or take it to a shop. i don't think i've ever seen a place that sells IFS diffs ready to go like they do the 3rds.

something to think about...maybe drop the extra $ now and upgrade to an ARB instead of the LockRite. i believe ARB still has the promo of a free compressor and we all know that someday down the road we all wished we sprung for the selectable locker instead of the auto locker especially if you drive on the street. lockrite isn't bad on the street but it's still not an open diff and you'll notice it one way or another.

another cheaper option would be to find front and rear diffs with the factory 4.88s, then install a lockright yourself. Of course, 4.88s won't be as low you were originally hoping for, but it'd save you a few hundred bucks.

 

Get the marlin 3rds. Trail gear also sells complete 3rds.

What do you mean the pinion wont work. It says on the site its ready to go just drop it in an go.

 

yes, if you buy the complete diff setup it will be ready to go. i said that because you said this:i interpreted that as if you planned on taking out just your carrier and ring gear and swapping in a 5.29 ring gear with lockrite in the carrier. if that's the case, no it won't work. for your COMPLETE diff from whomever you choose to buy from, you just unbolt everything, slide out your axles, put new diff in, bolt up, lube up, ready to go - under 1hr job.
