new exhaust: should i complain about this?

i was offered a great deal on a full exhaust incl. cat and muffler, supposedly from stock exh. manifold back, for $400 installed. i asked twice if it was all stainless and told yes. ok so i bought it.

they called me during install to say the kit didn't have an o2 bung in OEM location, and they'd have to cut in a mount. ok, i approved.

when i picked up the truck, it sounded and looked great! off i go.

just now, while taking pictures underneath for another thread, i see this crazy custom fabrication:

1. smaller diameter, not stainless, 02 mount. already surface rusting. REALLY?

2. LOOKING FORWARD FROM JUST BEFORE THE 02 MOUNT. STAINLESS ENDS AND GOES INTO WHAT? IS THAT MY OEM DOWNPIPE? you can see the manifold flange in the distance.

is it worth complaining about these two pieces being cut into the system? i'm suspecting this was not for a 4runner chassis.

I'd definitely bitch bout the 1st pic...2nd pic im not too sure if i'd bother...depends on they way they worded it when they sold it to you...the downpipe may be considered manifold to them...

the 1st pic looks like they just hacked your existing o2 mount out and welded inline...

I'd make them do it right, but you also told them to go ahead and use the old bung. Gonna take a fight...

I'd take it back, that's kind of crappy how they welded an old rusty pipe into your new system. I had my exhaust welded up by a local shop but I re-used my muffler. They ordered a new 02 bung and they did re-use the connector to the manifold but they cut it off right behind the dual pipe flange thingy. And I paid $127 out the door. I did supply the cat and O2 sensor though so I suppose your price was decent. Like people have already said, the downpipe probably isn't that big of a deal but the O2 bung and old pipe would annoy me. I'll snap some pics of mine in the daylight if you want.

thanx for these pics. your 1st pic is what i was expecting them to do. reuse the mount, not the old pipe it's attached to.

i'm going over there tomorrow to resolve this. thanx for confirming i'm not being overcritical.

For $400 you should have at least got some kissing too.

Stainless or not that is shoddy arsed up work IMO.

That definetly is B.S. the front HALF of your front pipe is just the old downpipe, welded on to a small piece of stainless. Its not a complete stainless setup if they have to weld into the existing section of downpipe.

He also said manifold back. Not "just in front of the cat...back".

I'd definitely complain/return. Stainless looks cool, but IMO it's unnecessary, and it will only be as durable as your non stainless parts. I got mine for around $150 installed

I'd complain, when I did mine. I was able to relocate the O2 sensor and I did it without welding and it's not leaking...yet. Have them do it right!!!

I would never pay $400 for any exhaust. Unless it includes a tri-y header. IMHO stainless piping is overrated. It nice to have in a good header though. Ask them what they were thinking performance wise when they hacked that factory piping into your brand new exhaust. I can understand them about the down pipe though since it 2-1. Like someone already said, you agreed to them reusing the bung not the pipe. My 2.25" was also around $150 from the header all the way back. I supplied the muffler. No cat.

hope you paid my CreditCard or Check...

They screwed you...and they are hoping you're too young or dumb to do anything.

Welcome to the world of people who rip-off others for a living.

1. Always know who your doing business with.
2. Always inspect your truck before you drive off the lot.

Best of luck

I agree. Stainless exhaust is overrated. I wouldn't want it unless I had a show car or something. I have 2.5" tubing all the way back from the headers. The first muffler shop I went to tried to hustle me just like what seems to have happened to the OP. They told me after the fact I had to have a certain brand muffler, and that they would charge me $250 to fab up a new crossover pipe for the headers. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau after they did a bunch of unauthorized work to the exhaust(and extremely crappy work).
