Hello all, you have a pretty neat forum here. I was searching it and did not find anyone else who was having the same problem as me. I just bought a 1985 Toyota 4WD 5sp 22re 142k. I have this squeeling sound when i start the truck from idle until about 2000rpm. Sound like metal on metal and it almost sounds like it is coming through my exhaust. I checked all of the clamps and the exhaust is not rubbing on anything (i am almost sure that the cat has been hollowed out). It doest do it all the time but when it does it is very loud and harmonic (sounds like it is resonating through the exhasut but when i pop the hood i can still hear it). Any help would be appreciated!

Check the water pump, when the bearing starts to go bad it can make a very loud squeeling sound. When i bought my 86 4Runner it was doing the same thing, so i replaced the water pump and that fixed the problem.

 

I was told when i bought the truck that the timing chain guides were recently replaced but i don't know if i believe it...however, the cover looks to have been removed due to what looks like a new gasket. Is there a way to check the water pump before i just replace it?

Yeah, undo the fan/belts and spin it with your hand. You shouldn't feel any resistance.

Here is the video of the sound. It was being nice to me today and i had to convince it to make the sound but here it is. Also, what is the little filter looking thing hanging down from the throttle in the video and should it be attached to anything?

cant really hear the sound to well to make assumptions on anything, the thingy your referring to is the dashpot, its only suppose to be connected to the tb.

 

I can`t really make out the squeal in the video, try and get another video of it when its louder, that might help us figure out what it is. When the water pump on my 4Runner was bad it was squealing alot louder than that, but i can`t tell from the video what that noise it.

 

Its the hogh pitched sound you can barely hear in the video when i let off of the throttle. I will try to get a better video tomorrow.

wow thats a really weird sound. you try using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope and probe around the engine listening for the noise?

I am going to try to check out the water pump tomorrow (read as today, it is 3AM).

 

So i invested in a mechanic's stethoscope and probed around a little today. It sounds the loudest (by alot) when i touch it to the alternator. Could the bearings in it be bad and making the noise?

 

Its quite possible that the bearings in the alternator could be going bad.

 

Pull the alt belt, and try it again
