97 Runner Stalled out driving down highway

driving home from work just moments ago and noticed my 4Runner was no longer running. went to start it back up and had to literally pump the gas for it to fire up. when i let off the gas it stalled out again.

my guess is fuel filter... any other suggestions???

IMO........the fuel filter would have to be almost plugged solid to stop the car
from running. So it's not likely.

A MAF could do this too. They can fail in different ways, and one of them is telling the ECU that there is very low air flow.

But it's a shot in the dark, any car enthusiast that wants to fix his own cars should own an ODBII computer, then a socket set.

just thought i would add this in... this happened after punching it to pass a truck. my rpm's reached around 5000rpm then i let off. i did not think this was of much importance but i guess i just want to eliminate all possibilities.

so check this out... i got up this morning to go replace the fuel filter and the runner started right up and i have had ZERO problems with it... i think bad gas could be the culprit this time.

I had the same thing happen to me on Friday 4/19/10. I have a 1999 4-runner V6 2x4 auto. I passed a slower car going up a hill; I used the button on the shifter “OD” and punched it all the way. Got to the top of the hill unclick the OD and ran it at normal speed and RPM for about a mile. Came to the first stoplight and the truck stalled on me at idle. Tried to start it a couple of times but it would keep stalling. On way to get it running again was to rev it while starting it. It’s been running fine since then with no issues. This same thing happened to me once before. About a year ago, no passing that time but was running the AC on high on a hot day. Came to a stop light and it stalled. Only way to get it running again was to rev it while starting it, then through it in to D and get moving ASAP. I doubt this is a bad gas issue, I only run Chevron from a local station that gets a ton of business.

i took my throttle body apart and cleaned it yesterday... noticed the accelerator cables were a little tight... loosened them and i have not had a problem since... so try cleaning your TB, Mas Air Flow Sensor, and then take a look at those cables...
