Hey guys
Have just bought a 1990 4runner with 3vze engine and manual box.
Am in New Zealand so its right hand drive if that counts for anything.
Have a problem that the truck seems to have a lean to my passenger side.
The drivers side is sitting a good inch or so higher than the passenger.

So did a bit of measuring this afternoon.
There is 2cm more strut showing on the lower part of the rear strut of the drivers side than there is on the passenger side.
In the front ive taken pics of both drivers and passenger side in the front, do these settings look right for the alignment? the bump stop things show the difference in height quite clearly.

Also what are the torsion bars and how are they adjusted? Does anyone think this may be the problem?
Any help appreciated as i would imagine it should be sitting level.

 

mm 20 mm thats a bit, well the torsion bars are attached to the rear of the upper arms. The back end of the bars are attached to an adjustment bracket. The torsion bars are about 4 foot long. Adjust so the spindle to fender height is the same, i know its hard to explain, get a service manual, good luck

Make sure you have new adjuster bolts - they are known to break pretty frequently when doing this.

Stock would be 14" from top of rim to fender.

 

TC good (how to), better with pictures. Never knew bolts were a prob, from rust? or just, thats how it is?

 

Usually rust - they are very exposed, right where the tires sling stuff up.

 

m well then i am lucky, or could it be the 12000 gallons of wd40 that i have sprayed underneath, and there is still a bit of rust.

 

move to a place that doesn't have rust issues....like texas..NM, OK..lol my truck is rust freeee lol

 

Ok so i adjusted the passengers torsion bar this morning so now the front is pretty close to level.
The rear on the other hand is still 2-3cm lower on the passenger side. Would i be right in guessing that the left rear spring may have sagged?
Also do i need to get a wheel alignment now, as adjusting torsion bar has left the steering wheel slightly off centre.

Yes, adjusting the torsion bars affects the camber pretty significantly.

 

When i first bought my 90 2 door 4runner i noticed it was sagging on the passenger side i replaced the shocks all around and everything was leveled again or uh equal i did not however adjust my T-Bars but if your shocks are still good than you can count them out..and my truck isn't rust free by the gods i wish it was dam Canadian winters and their salt....

 

Yeah dont think the shocks have been replaced for a long time so mite put that on list of things to do. And get a wheel alignment and see how it all looks.

 

Shocks (even nitrogen charged) don't significantly affect the spring rate, and won't help level your ride.

There was something else wrong with Xeo's rig that the operation of replacing the shocks fixed.

 

Really? Well when i replaced mine it was pretty level well comparing it to before i replaced the 20 year old shocks. My passenger side was sagging a lot in the front before i replaced my shocks. When i replaced the passenger side one i was astonished to find that there was absolutely no resistance when i compressed it using my hands. After that my truck looked leveled i didn't measure anything :p Here's a picture of my front IFS i dunno but i think my passenger side sags just a tad bit dunno if anyone can see or notice or maybe im just paranoid @_@
