When's the best time to rebuild?
I'm just worried my 22re with almost 400 000 km's is going to die sooner or later (my money is on later but...). It still drives fine but it's starting to sound worse, as in weird rattles when idling, clutch squawk, more gas consumption.
Long story short is it better to just drive it and risk the possibility of someday something happening and rebuild or buy a new motor once the truck is un-drivable. Because maybe those rattles and squawks dont really mean anything, and I may get another 50 or 100 k out of it. If the sounds begin to sound dire I would try and do something about it asap.
or
Rebuild as soon as I can afford it, before anything happens to it. Seems like the obvious choice to rebuild before something major in the engine fails. Hopefully it will stay in good running order until this can happen.
The only thing is that money is a pretty big issue right now, but hopefully with a little luck things will work out in the new year. That said if anyone wants to help out a 2nd year electrician with a job in the Vancouver area please PM me.

I would do it as soon as you have the money.. I could have probably driven mine more than I did before the rebuild, but I'm glad I did it when I did. I don't think the previous owner took very good care of it before I bought it because I was driving it for about six months from the time I bought it before I noticed blue smoke out the tail pipe and oil was leaking everywhere. I was lucky though, I have a cousin who rebuilds engines, and my bro helped me with the install. Good luck!

Hello
I have a 1994 Toyota truck I just got repainted and it has 296k I had it since 1996 with 8k. I would personnally drive it. Be aware whats going on but you can nurse it along. if you you dont abuse it. I think you can still keep going good luck

Rattling when idling? Check the timing chain soon.
More than likely, you can keep going till it breaks. But usually when things break they cost more to fix. I'd plan on fixing it as soon as possible.

Check your valve adjustment if it hasnt been done in a while, keep the motor full of oil and drive it.
When a motor makes sounds its trying to tell its owner it needs a little TLC.
This goes a long way in helping these little motors last a long time.

I hear you, keeping fluids full and oil changed is no problem, but with my wrenching skills I would f' up a valve adjustment I think (maybe not but I dont know how). So for me tlc usually = money...which is a problem for me at this moment in time.
