newbie here got the 3.4 just have ?s

i have a 89 toy 4x4 5 speed with the 3.slow my mother in law had a 2004 toy tacoma prerunner auto she some how snapped the cam gear off the cam dealership said motor was sludged up so i swapped a new one in and now have the blown one sitting in my garage so im trying to decide whether it would be worth doing the swap and how much it would cost me i know i would have to rebuild it but what about the ecu and harness evryone i have seen so far got the complete kit engine harness and ecu. Has anyone esle gone and pieced it all together or do i need to scratch it and start from the begginning thanks for any info

Knowing what I know now, I would never start this until I had EVERYTHING from the same vehicle and I don't think that I would do it without the donor sitting here like I have.

Too many things that are needed and to be referenced. Can search Google for many but so much easier to walk about and look.

The actually motor is ONE piece to the many needed for this MOTOR swap.

as far as being able to look at the original my mother in law only lives 25 houses away. Is this the only real answer for the motor to make decent power and better or equal to mpg. I have looked for things for the 3.0 and havent had much luck thats why i was going to go the 3.4 route. but if it gets to expensive and doesnt give me that much hp gain then i guess ill deal with the 3.0. I drive almost 50 miles a day so i want more power but would like to get same mpg about 19-20 mpg.

right now im on the final debugging of my truck and i sat in the same boat as you
I found a totaled 04 taco 4x4 auto with 40000 miles on it. i thought that i could get the harness to work but just had to much wiring for me. instead i went with just the 3.4, and found a harness, ecu, throttle body, and evap vsv's from a 99 manual 4x4. the mechanical is not menacing at all if you even just have a slight clue of what your doing. before my swap the only major thing that i had ever done on my truck was a timing belt change. the biggest help is the books. so if you decide to do this swap get books on both engines. and commit about 4+ weeks to getting it done.

it can be done fairly easy. just read alot on this web site and it will give you a very good understanding of the labor needed on the swap.

READ UP ON ALL THE 3.4 SWAPS!!! You're gonna see everyones mistakes, solutions, and take notes on the key stuff. I read through all the write ups atleast twice before i knew what to do. Also find a complete donor rig!!!

X2 on this!! I have read I think everything on the net. Here, Pirate, Marlin, Ttota, etc. Rarely as I am searching around, do I come across something new at this point. I have been reading since July before I started this a few weeks ago. Kind of like watching reruns of the Office or King of Queens and rarely seeing one I havent seen, but i still watch them.

It would be quite foolish to even start until you have at least read everything you can, and it takes a long time. For example, just read Evoltra, Cadman, MT Goat, and Slater442w30. All excellent threads (and there are so many more good ones but those come to mind, I have about 25 bookmarked that i reference for pictures), just reading those 4 should take you a good, solid afternoon. And that is only 4. I steal, modify, and make my own everyone else's workarounds, thoughts and ideas to fit my needs.

Good luck

Lets see some pics with a valve cover off, to see what condition your condition is in.
