crank seal question

crank seal question

Can anyone tell me how difficult replacing the crank seal is , do I need any special tools? I'm getting prepped to do the w/p, t. belt etc and what about the other seals Cams?? bearings or replace pulleys/idlers thanks in advance

You do need to fabricate the SST used to undo the crackshaft pulley. There are diagrams and links to make one on YT. A LONG breaker bar too. The crankshaft pulley bolt torque spec is 217 ft lbs. If it was me, I would buy everything and whatever I didn't use I would return, avoiding 2 trips when you are in the middle. Here is what I would get since I looked at doing it myself:
TB
WP & Gasket
Idler pulleys (2 different)
Tensioner
Thermostat & Gasket
Radiator Hoses
Cam Seals
Crankshaft Seal (I would think there is an SST to put it in)
Toyota Coolant
You just posted your mileage, I would replace everything and download the FSM for your vehicle here on YT it will have pics of all the special tools for doing it.

If you don't want to fabricate the crankshaft SST you can buy an aftermarket one for $50 bucks http://www.toolsource.com/toyota-har...-p-103978.html -- Schley 64400.

I just recently did a timing belt and water pump and used the 64400 and it worked great. Its worth the $50 not to have to fabricate a tool and its VERY overbuilt for what it is.

How did you hold that tool still? It doesn't look like it is very long to hold.

There is a flange on the side with a hole for a 1/2" drive breaker bar. What I did to take the crank nut on and off it put in the tool and turn the pully till the breaker bar is against the frame rail or the ground and then put my torque wrench on the nut and go at it.

The 64400 weights about 8 lbs and is overbuilt. The ring is about an 2" thick and the flange for the breaker bar is about 3/4".

I got that part figured out my main question is about replacing the SEAL itself,how difficult/special tools to remove replace etc thanks again everybody
