Horrible noise from the front end
91 4cyl 4x4 ext cab pu
Need your advice on this sound... Sounds like grinding metal, when in gear rolling forward and reverse, while in 2x have not tried it when the hubs are locked in 4x4. Does not make the sound when the clutch is engaged or in neutral.
Do you have any ideas on what this could be?
Thanks

Drain the trans, t-case and front diff fluid and replace.
They all use 24mm drain and fill plugs (make sure you can get the fill plug out first). Make sure there is no metal in the oil..

The worst part about this story is my wife brought it limping home from a 1000 mile trip to Iowa. Who knows how long it had been grinding dry. She said it just started on our home road. Hmmm

I would not think so...if you have it in neutral engine off and drift does it make noise? clutch in does it make noise? then I'm thinking the gearbox. A throwout bearing will wine usually not grinding. If the clutch was slipping you'd have different noises.

the sound is gone
I changed the TC, trany, and both differential fluid and the sound is no longer audible.
Although, when I drove it around the block to warm up the fluids before changing I could not hear the sound. So for now the sound is gone.
Thanks for the advice!

The noise came back
I mentioned it on another post, but I took my truck into my buddies mechanic and he diagnosed it with the Carrier Bearing/ center bearing and the clutch =$2100. Ouch. Made me assess if I want to fix or flip...
I decided to fix it with the help of another buddy whom is more mechanically knowledgable that I. He drove it and was not convinced of the Tech's diagnosis. Because the sound goes away in 4th gear. Also, when idleing we could slightly hear the bearing whine but when we disengaged the clutch the sound went away slowly= Tranny?
So I found someone who wants to rebuild the tranny if everything looks reasonablly in good shape. We are going to replace the clutch at the same time. Although it did not look that bad. The tech is an ass. NOt sure if he even looked at it.

Well I highly doubt he dropped the transaxle too look at the clutch, you're correct in that assumption.
You might be better off looking for a tranny on craigslist. If you wanna save money that is.
