22r blowback

I just finished replacing the head gasket on my 84 22r. Had head shaved. Now I'm getting blowback out of the valve cover. I adjusted valves cold to spec. I have a small manifold leak but I don't think thats the problem. Can someone help shed some light on some possabilities? Spent 2 days putting it all back together, not looking farward to doing it again!
Thanks

You don`t adjust the valves cold, you adjust them with the engine hot, (normal operating temperature) you could possibly burn a valve adjusting them cold.

Yea if you got blow back then thats not good news. Hows your PCV valve? If thats fine then you got some rings worn bad...... prob about 70-80% cylinder leakage.... good luck with the rebuild. Yea Valves on a 22r are always adjusted hot so yea go back and do that again hot.

Thanks for the replies. I was scared that it may be worn rings. I was right there if I had only known that could have been a problem. I originally had water in my oil. I have another question. Since I just had the head shaved and barely got it up to running temp. will I have to have it shaved again? Don't want to spend fifty bucks on nothing! I'll do a compression check this weekend and post back with the results.
Thanks Again
Oh what about the gaskets? No Permatex was used, will these have to be replaced?

You really only need to shave head & block when you've overheated. I guess after years of driving things will warp a little, but you should be fine on that. How long was there water in the oil? It destroys bearing very fast. How many miles on the engine? Could be time for a rebuild anyways. Were you not getting blowby before the head gasket job?

Valves can be adjusted cold, and there are specs to adjust them to cold, but that's really only when you think they're way out or new, just to get them close, so when you start the engine things actually work. Once the engine warms up & runs for a bit, you adjust them again to hot specs.

only had water in oil for short time, as soon as I noticed I shut it down. Only 30,000 miles on a rebuild. I had such a hard time getting the harmonic balancer bolt out that I feel now that I may have jumped a tooth on my timing. Dont recall any blow back before I Touched it.

Well I havn't done a compression test yet, since I don't have a tester, but I set it at TDC/compression. Pulled valve cover and checked timing chain. alignment pin was at 12 oclock and valves were in the position they were supposed to be. I pulled the plugs and 2, 3, and 4 were covered in oil.
Any ideas?

Well those readings are pretty low...what you really need to do is a cylinder leakdown test!! That will tell you where the oil is leaking from pretty quick!

This would tell me if I had jumped a tooth on the timing chain wouldn't it? The only way I can get it to Idle is with the timing really advanced then after a minute it will stall out.
Come on guys. I'm sure someone out there can answer these questions.
Thanks in advance,
aalan

Is there anyone out there willing to help? Or is it simply due to the weekend or what? Lots of other questions from other people with no replies either. Whats up?
