Well, I've hit a wall. I've gotten my center bolt out, and I've gotten the four smaller bolts out of the pulley. Now what? I can't seem to get the pulley loose! Any suggestions?

 

Well, you need a proper puller. If you tap it off with a hammer, you will likely damage the damper and need a new one. Happened to me.

 

I always use a rubber mallet, just dont wail on it, tap gently, and tap different spots ev time.

 

you can get it off with a hammer or a rubber mallet. Thats what I use atleast...just don't beat the crap out of it and remember to tap it around the whole circle

 

You can try spraying it good with PB and then using a brass hammer, give it a good whack in the center. Sometimes it will break it loose, and then you can work it off with your hands. You could also try taking a pair of large pry bars, one on either side of the pulley and by alternating prying with one bar or the other kind of 'walk' the pulley off there. Be careful with this though, I've seen people pry too hard and that pulley break loose and come flying off and nail the pry-er in the face. not pretty. Sometimes, no amount of beating on it will make a bit of difference, and you just need a puller to get it off. You can get a whole puller kit at harbour freight, northern tools, cummins tools, or wherever for about 10 bucks and makes life way easier. The puller is a hundred times easier than any amount of beating, prying, cussing, screaming, or tools flying across the shop at the wall.

 

autozone or any national retail store like that will loan you a puller.

 

harmonic pulley puller, or you can do it with a rubber mallet and do what they have been saying. It's not hard ya just gotta think about it.

 

try going to autozone or like a farmsupply place rualking if in mid west or harborfreight and get a three jaw gear puller shouldn't be over 20.$ or get your bfh and spray it pb

huh... mine wriggled right off by hand, even after being locked in place for 296k miles

 

They should come off by hand but some of the folks here have reported water pump leaks that caused the pulley to rust into place. You can rent a harmonic balancer puller from an auto parts store or buy one for less than $20 I would imagine. Makes the job quick and easy, without damage.
