My new $1000 Taco Prerunner

Just got this truck last night. It's a 98 Tacoma with a 2.7/Auto and 340k miles! I got it from the original owner and to say the least it needs a little cosmetic help, but I've seen a lot worse. Mechanically though, it is in great shape. I changed the oil this morning, flushed the tranny, changed the plugs, and checked it out front to back. No codes, no leaks, new brakes, newish tires, no smoke, runs and shifts great.

I will be removing the god-awful front bumper and replacing the missing parts. Parts I need: Pass side mirror, driver side tail light, pass side marker light, grill, and a bumper.

It needed window crank handles inside, but I had those from my parts truck. Other than all that, it just needs a good interior cleaning.

Pics...

Other then that, I say wash down the engine bay and drive it till the wheels fall off

Has the motor ever had any work you know of ?

The bumper has potential if you do some cutting and grinding you could shape into some thing more on the lines of like this granted this is a terrible paint shop job but you get the idea.

nice deal for 1k but that bumper looks like crap. Easy fix tho. Other than that the truck sounds like it runs great.

Good find.

Yeah, it had a burnt valve at 130k, so the head was done then, and the tranny had a new torque converter and the flywheel replaced after the 200k mark.

Burnt valve was probably from the exhaust manifold being cracked..
Check it and see if its the stock one and see if its cracked.
If it is hit up deathcougar for the 01+ mini header conversion.

Have fun with the new ride !!

Yeah, the PO said the burnt valve was due to the manifold being cracked. It's been replaced.

Looks like a steal for a grand. A little bit of work and you'll have a great runner. The bumper could be salvaged though. Trim that grill piece off and cut it a little higher and give a bit of an angle like the chop jOb posted and it has potential. It kinda reminds me of a Semi bumper now.

Thanks for the info scoob. As for the bumper, it's coming off and being replaced with a tube bumper.

Finally did some work to this truck. We've just been putting around town in it, and all is well. There was a small leak in the radiator, so I ordered a new one. Installed it today, as well as another bumper I had lying around. While I was at it, I straightened out the core support a bit. Now I need a corner light and grill, anyone have one? I also bought some eBay seat covers for it for $50. Pics....

I got at least an inch of lift in the front by removing that monstrous bumper!

This truck is great. I never have to work on it, lol. I did find a grill and bed liner for it though. Still need some parts, but I guess I'm not in much of a hurry. Pics...

I am sure glad my wife doesn't care to drive fancy (expensive) cars.

Nope, it's almost at 342,000 miles now. Still shifts perfectly.

Yeah, the bumper's not crooked, the body is. The passenger side is a little lower than the driver side. I'll address it when I get the marker light, since I'll need to straighten the sheet metal at that time (for the marker light to fit).

Regardless, this truck will never be a show queen. It's just cheap transportation. Thanks for the comments.
