I've driven a ford ranger since the day I could drive. I had two clutches put in it and finally put the last one in myself only to learn that it was the slave cylinder not the clutch plate or disc. TheRangerStation.com forums has been my goto for the past year concerning any maintenance on the ranger. Also had a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 for 6 months and frequented TacomaWorld.com

I just bought a 93 yota Pickup 4x4 V6 3.0. 245xxx on the odo with no knowledge of the last clutch job. The only info I got was that the previous owner was told 3-4 years ago when he bought it that it needed a new clutch. The clutch pedal release is at the very top and I can hear/feel some slipping in first under high torque. I don't mind doing the whole clutch kit but if I can save some time just doing the slave (the idiots at ford put theirs in the bellhousing) I'd be grateful.

I know there are head gasket problems with these, anything else?

well the slave on the 4cyl manuals is on the outside on the passenger side; I would imagine it's probably the same story on the V6's as well, so the hardes thing about installing a new one is bleeding the system when you're done

But typically, a failing slave or master cyl will give different symptoms... the trans will either be hard to get in gear without grinding, in some bad cases you may not be able to disengage the clutch at all, but more commonly they just start leaking externally when the internal o-rings fail

I know the stock clutch isn't much to write home about as far as hold-force is concerned. With my OEM style clutch, I could hardly spin the tires dumping the clutch at 4k RPMs to be honest, it's probably the softest OEM clutch I've ever felt... BUT, it should hold without slipping if you're say, driving 5 er 6 miles per hour in 1st gear, and then mash on the gas; it should hold firm and just accelerate. If it IS slipping in that instance, then more than likely it's either just a cheapo clutch kit that was installed by the previous owner (cheap compound on the disc, or cheap soft pressure plate), OR the clutch IS FAILING already (disc is badly warn, or preasure plate has lost grabbing force)...

well when i relaced mine i put in a centerforce 2, oh i also put in the heavier flywheel i beleive from lce

Replace it with parts from www.marlincrawler.com you can also buy pretty much anything else clutch related you need..

I have their HD clutch kit, best clutch I have ever used. Compaired to my buddys ranger, the pedal feels like a marshmallow!

 

If you're slipping in 1st, and not say 3rd or 5th, I'd venture to say the clutch might be okay and more likely the problem is that the clutch is operating with little pedal travel so it may only need adjusted.

 

If you do end up replacing the clutch I would also suggest a Marlin HD clutch. It's a decent price and they are really high quality.

 

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I figured this was a fairly recent thread so somebody might see the question in time. I'm getting a new engine from japanengines inc. and a clutch to go with. I got a call from them this morning wanting to know what diameter the clutch disk needed to be. Its an 87 4runner SR5 and I'm not gonna be pulling the engine out until I have the new one ready so I need to know what the diameter of the clutch disk is preferably before they ship the engine so that my truck inst out of commission while they ship the clutch separately. Anyways, if any of you happen to have yours out or know off the top of your head, the information would be greatly appreciated.

yeah, $200 ain't bad. It only lists the Hilux as an option for pre-tacoma trucks. anyone know if this is the same as the "pickup"

 

Yeah, everywhere but in north america, our trucks were called hilux's(still are).

 

Haynes says there is no clutch adjustment for the pre-tacoma truck. Is there a way to bring the release point back down towards the floor?

 

1993 toyota big red slave cyl seems ok and clutch is clutching but pedal wont come back up. is there a spring that may need replacing?

 

sounds like a pressure plate failure. check to see if a bracket is broken first.
