Opinions: Are A340 Shift Solenoids A Service Item?

Saw another post on the board about a sticking shift solenoid in an A340 auto trans.

I have an '89 3.0 auto with 134k miles on the trans.

As often as I see these posts, the thought has occured to me that the solenoids are almost a service item. Any thoughts on that? Also, what mileage would one target to swap them out? 150k?

When I get into a really remote area the one thing that nags at me is that thought of losing a shift solenoid in the middle of nowhere and having to deal with that on the way out.

Thanks,

Mike

If you loose a shift solenoid, in most cases you can manually shift. one of mine went at abouut 225000 miles. Not sure when you should change them.

If there is an electrical problem with the solenoids, you'll get a flashing code with the OD light. If there is a mechanical problem there will be no codes. There are no replaceable parts on the solenoids. You can pull them out and check them.

The shift solenoids work as a pair.
1st gear-no.1 on, no.2 off
2nd gear-no.1 on, no.2 on
3rd gear-no.1 off, no.2 on
OD- no.1 off, no.2 off
