When using the special pitman arm puller it stripped the threads on the puller. Any suggestions on how to remove the pitman arm? It just doesnt want to let go! It is stuck!
I can rent one from my auto parts store but I don't want to damage another puller.

 

i here you man. when i took the stocker arm off mine i thought i broke something too. i blew threw my workbench, and my roommate went head over teakettle in the process. try some penetrating fluids and let it sit for a day or two. then go buy a new puller and yank that sucker off!!!!!

seriously though... use that puller (or rather a new one ), get a good amount of tention on it, then tap on the pitman arm close to where it's mounted to the gearbox with a hammer a few good solid times, and 9 times outta 10 that'll break it free. as Ron said, penetrating oil is you friend too

Buy a better quality puller. Soak the bastard in penetrent aswell..

 

I had the same problem. In fact I broke the auto parts store loaner. Luckily they just charged it out to the store. I was suggested to get this one:

The best price I found for one was about $55. In the end I bought a cheapy at Harbor Freight and followed the method described by iamsuperbleeder above. Worked like a charm. Put lots of tension on it with the puller and then give it some healthy whacks. Good luck.

 

After you get that SOB off, make sure you put the new one on the same spline haha.

I went through the same thing when i did my idler and LBJs. The "tap" with a BFH works well.

 

What I usually do is all the above, good penetrating oil, puller. heat and hammer. What usually seems to work is to put the puller on tight, hammer a few times then let it sit. Re-tighten it periodically, add oil and heat and hammer blows. Usually after a few hours it'll pop right off. Then clean the splines and apply some good anti-sieze compound to be sure it'll come loose next time.

 

I used very light heat in conjunction with the puller to remove mine; by light heat, I mean about a minute or two of heating with a simple propane torch. This is because I didn't want to melt or overheat the rubber gaskets inside the steering box,. Although they're probably a little more resilient than I give them credit for, I wouldn't want to cause any problems!

 

haha, not to mention the PS fluid is ATF... if you don't know how flammable ATF is, drip some onto your hot exhaust manifold... you'll find out quick...
