This is my first post on here but I've been reading for months--this place is fantastic!

I'm "half-way" through a 22r engine rebuild (1986 carbed pickup w/200k) , which is to say that I'm about to get the block back from the machine shop and start putting things together. This is my first engine rebuild and so far its been a pleasure, but tearing things apart is always fun and easy! I labeled the hell out of everything with tape when I tore it apart but I didn't have access to a camera. The block has been at the shop for a month and now when I see parts I'm no longer so confident as to their exact location! I was wondering if anyone had a bucket of photos from their 22r rebuild sitting around that they wouldn't mind sharing? It needs to be carbed in order for the photos to be useful to me. This would probably require mailing me a CD...I'll offer up $20 for the gesture.

The reason the block has been at the shop a month is because some PO swapped in an early version 22r (round exhaust port), but the head was cracked and apparently older heads are hard to find, so I'm going with the correct pear-shaped exhaust port block and a new performance head/cam from Ted at engnbldr.com. I'm assuming this newer block is a direct bolt-in and all the parts will fit correctly, except maybe drilling a few holes in the exhaust manifold? Anything else funky I should know about?

I understand how you feel, my engine has been at the machine shop for almost 3 months.

you said you switched heads?? If you did, what about the pistons?? it's my understanding that if you have domed pistons you have to use round port head

anyone heard different??

 

I dont quite understand what your doing but you will need the right head for the right block they are not interchangable. The intake and exhaust manifolds are different so you will need new ones of those too if you wanna go with the short block (pear shaped ports)

 

I am going to end up with the correct block for an '86 22r (i.e., the one that came with the truck originally, not the round port exhaust manifold block) and a new correct head for that correct block. Internally the only parts I'm reusing are the crankshaft and rods, everything else will be new.
I was wondering about the exhaust manifold, but Ted at ENGNBLDR said that all I'd need to do is drill a new hole or two. We'll see.

I thought the round exh ports were put on some 22r's up to 87? but the blocks are the same from 84 and up?

wasnt it just the early (pre 84) 22r's that had the shorter blocks?

The 85 I worked on had the pear shaped exh ports. My 87 is pear shaped (both 22r's).

 

my 86 22r is pear shaped.

and ya was just seeing if you were local, always good to have a helping hand instead of pictures.

what do you need pictures of, putting the motor together, or getting everything back in once you get the engine finished?

 

Someone local would be great, but no one is local to me. I live 2 1/2 hours away from the nearest grocery store/machine shop/you name it. There are folks around who know how to rebuild motors for sure, but not where that one particular part gets bolted on.
The motor guts I have photos of, and that's pretty straight forward. I'm more concerned about all the external , EGR, etc. It would be the first part of the teardown.

 

im in the same boat as you right now i got my whole engine out of my truck and torn apart but i just look at it and im like what the he!! did i do ha but im gonna put this site to use when im throwing it back together i havent took my head or block to the shop yet im looking around to see if one of my friends has a engine stand i can borrow but ill keep a eye on the thread good luck

I can pretty much look at a part or bolt and tell you where it belongs on a 22r early or late are you still having probems or did you figure it out. i can make pics i have many aprts laying around collecting dust.

i ordered that DVD watched it a couple times they dont go through things very well from what i remember i got it sitting in my room somewhere ill have to take another look at it
