Oddball question.

My brother has a 2005 Ford Ranger. It died yesterday, just shut off. The fuel pump was not working, so we figured that was it. Before we tore into it I searched the web and saw some info on an inertia swtich going bad. Sure enough, his intertia switch was the cause, turning the fuel system off.

The switch is a safety feature. In an accident, the switch "senses" the impact and turns off power to the fuel pump, so that a broken fuel line does not spew fuel everywhere.

Does this type of switch exist on the early Toyota fuel injected fuel systems? I'm just curious to know and then find it so that I can store that bit of knowledge away for future reference.

I could not find anything in the FSM, but, it was a quick look.

The 2d gens don't have an inertia switch; the fuel pump is shut off when the VAF no longer senses air flow (in other words, when the engine stops sucking in air).

I doubt a first gen would have an inertial switch. What does the FSM say about the fuel pump wiring?

 

The wiring diagram does not indicate an inertia switch. But, my brother's Ford FSM was not clear on that switch either, but, that is Ford, and this is Toyota.

Now that I look more at the wiring diagram, it should have been clear to me that that type of switch was not present.

I did not know that the shutoff was done by the VAF, that makes sense, from a systems standpoint.
