The 4.0 would be the better choice of the 3.

yes quite a few people have swaped the 4.7 into 2nd and 3rd gen 4runners. But a more common swap is the 1uz-fe. Its a 4.0L V8 Alloy block and cast aluminum internals. It doesnt produce as much torque but a little bit of forced induction will fix that right up.
Oh and by the way, the 4.7 is a cast iron block and the 4.0 V6 or 1gr-fe is aluminum alloy with a 1mm layer of iron surrounding every cylinder. all with cast aluminum internals. check out UZSWAP.COM

Hey, my buddy just totaled his tundra with the 4.7L but the motors good.

I'm thinking of putting it in to my 94 4x4, single cab, short box. has anyone attempted this swap yet?

Spaldings in spokane sells 4.7 2uz's for $3-500 all day. way cheap than anything else to replace. 1uz would theoretically be better for weight and power output but are getting had to find with less than 300k
