Best suspension setup for 3rd gen.

Ok, so I know everyone has their own opinions on what the " best " is, but I want to hear from people that REALLY wheel their rigs... you know who you are. No muddin', no power lines, REAL wheelin'. I was running the heavy duty OME lift on my 3rd gen, and that was pretty much it. 285 MT/R's and a Detroit in the rear got me pretty much everywhere I needed to go, but sometimes it wasn't pretty. I'm looking at a Roger Brown bodylift, but I don't know if I want a 2" or a 1". The vehicle is outfitted w/ an ARB bull bar and a Warn 9500i. I'm not too concerned about the positioning of the bull bar so much as I am the sliders, but I'll weld those on after I do the body lift, so they should still function effectively. I've seen a lot about the SAW fronts and OME rear combos, but I've heard about ride harshness and sagging from both camps (Full OME and OME/SAW combos) I've got an axle and some springs, so SAS is always an option. My question is this.. barring the SAS, what suspension setup is ideal for my style of wheeling? i.e. technical trail riding/rock crawling. An ARB locker is going up front as soon as it gets here, as is the snorkel. I'm also looking for a rear bumper/tire carrier if you guys know of anyone that makes one... or the plans for one and I'll fab it up myself. My other trail rig is a 95' Land Cruiser w/ a full 6" lift via OME and spacers. Obviously it's solid axle all the way around and it's locked f/c/r so I don't expect the 4Runner to keep up with it on all the trails, but I fully expect it to surpass it on the smaller ones. Let's hear some thoughts!

As far as hardcore wheeling is concerned, I mean anything rated a 4 or higher trail wise, any set of trails that require lockers and at least 33's, so on and so forth... Tellico, Moab, Paragon, Black Hills, etc.

I am Sorry this is totally off topic,

I am impressed by your HP #'s on your Supra. My question is what clutch are/were you running to put up such high #'s? I'm looking for a clutch for my S/C 3rd gen. I am not even close to your HP output, but the stock clutch won't hold the boost, so what do/did you run?

I am looking at an ACT street disk & HD Pressure Plate
or a
Southbend, Kevlar street disk & HD plate

what kind of turbo? Lemme tell you, if I had the money I'd buy your car from you instantly (that is, if it's in good condition)

but I really want to buy a stock supra so i can put my own hard work into it. I really love the sp63's. But I heard the sp budget kit isn't too bad either. And i really like the look and what I've heard about the new veilside titanium exhaust. I've been a supra fanatic since I was a little kid, guess I just gotta wait till I graduate......

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION...

if you can do it right (and get Steve's approval) do the SAS. what axle do you have? the rear will prob need to be totally reconfigured to be done right, either leafs or new geometry for coils.

if not SAS, the saw and ome works great for soooo many people, including myself.

let me know if you have any questions.

If you can copy Fear's setup, you'll be in pretty good shape. I've never heard him talk about the on road manners of his rig, but I've seen it flex better than any other 3rd gen I've ever seen. There are a couple 3rd gens around that are SASed, and they can probably flex better than Fear, but his long travel setup make my OME look silly.

Here's a couple of pics...

More pics here and here.

Seriously?

I obviously vote for the SAS. Stronger and much better flex. But for serious stuff you should be looking at a crawler too...

Jacksonpt,

What did he do to his rear bumper? It looks like he incorporated the stock bumper, and some sort of reinforcement to the bottom of it. How can I get in touch with him?

Yeah, I read that, but I'm wanting to know what they did, so I can get some mroe ideas. It looks like it was pretty easy to do from the pics, but I'm wondering how strong it is comparison to a totally new bumper.

I agree with most on this board, the best bang for the buck is going to be the SAW / OME setup. If you want/need and can afford it go with the SAS but that is bigger $$$ than the SAW / OME combo. Just my thoughts. I run the SAW/OME so I know what that is like.

a working setup

On my site I have plenty of info to help you out as for getting your rig setup. Albuquerque Jim can testify as to how this thing wheels. I have been very happy with the way this wheels, however I do need stronger components, the D44.
