Question K&N FIPK for 99 4runner 3.4L v6

After many years of wanting I finally traded in my Outback for a 4Runner. I have added the K&N FIPK to it and the engine light came on about 40miles after the install. I reset the computer and it was fine for about 4 miles and the light came back on. Any Ideas? Are the FIPK's a waste of money? Thanks in advance for your help.

do a deckplate mod for about $10 and dump the FIPK on ebay...

good luck...

Ditto

The K&N FIPK has a write-up this month in Performance Parts catalogue and it is doing the same thing the deckplate mod does for about a 1/20 of the cost.

I was skeptical about the deckplate mod at first myself, but definitely worth the time and effort and for $10 you can't go wrong.

Check out the tech write ups on how to do the deckplate mod or PM me and I'll tell you how cause I just did it a week or two ago. Took me all of 30 minutes.

Look real closely to see if all of your vacum hoses are indeed put back snugly and where they bleong. Check toward the back of the engine bay and see if one may have come off. Just a thought.

The CEL is probably a result of a misrouted vacuum line, or lack thereof.

Like Bamachem said, dump that piece on ebay and get yourself a deckplate. I have seen FIPK pull $175 or more on the 3.4 via ebay. Poor souls.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick replies. I put the OE airbox back in and dropped it off at the dealer today. I bought the truck last weekend. I did check all vac lines. The feeling I get is that the FIPK was a total waste of money. I bought it from JCWhitney and they say 100% satisfaction. So Ia m going to return it to them for a full refund. It only has 100 miles on it. Do you guys reccommend the K&N air filter? Or is there a better one out there. Also is there a link for the airbox mod you are referring to? I did a airbox mod on the Outback but it was very simple. CUt the bottom out off the airbox. Done. Thanks again for all the responses.

Here's the link, it is in the Tech-write ups section on yotatech.

Hope this helps! PM me if you have any questions as I just did this mod.

Amsoil filter. #115. Cheaper and better than K&N.

well hate to admit it, but I have the FIPK on my truck, I bought it off of Ebay before I even knew of Yotatech, and I payed like $220 for it. Took about fifteen minutes to install. The check engine light came on after about 3 miles, and I rechecked all the hose connections, and let the truck run for another 10 min. I think the computer just has to adjust for the extra air intake the FIPK puts in. The light went away, and in came the power. I don't care what anyone says, I'm telling you there is a definite power increase with this thing. Its not just something you hear and feel. So just reset the computer on your truck and your check engine light should go away.
If you can still return it I probably would, and do the deck plate mod, if for no other reason other then when you go off roading and you happen to hit water into your engine bay, your going to suck in LOTS of water. like I did a few months back. Hope this helps.

this may help you:

i just had my s/c installed and after driving away from the dealer the eng light came on. i drove it back and they plugged it into the computer. the code came up that the MAF sensor was bad. the tech told me that it happens when the air filter gets a little too dirty and some dirt passes through and sticks to the very sensitive maf. told me it is about an hour worth of labor to clean.

where i am going with this...

the tech also said that whatever i do, DO NOT put a k&n on the truck. he says they let too much dirt past for one thing. but what may matter to you is that he said the oil used on the filter (especially if you over-oil it), eventually passes through the filter and gums up the MAF sensor. he told me this creates a "pending code" in the computer, meaning that it takes three times for that MAF sensor to trigger the comp that something's wrong before it throws the engine light on.

from what he said, sounds like you could have the oil from the filter on the sensor, fouling it up.

understand that i am not a toyota tech, just relaying what one told me about my vehicle less than a week ago.

The oil you are talking about is only applied after 30K miles, it comes with the FIPK, bt is not on there when you first get it.

But you are right, I have heard the same thing from at least three different sources. They tell me just to pull the air filter out, and rinse it off, and then dry it, and you shouldbe good to go.

When I had a K&N on my Taco (pre-deckplate/Amsoil) it came pre-oiled.

sdastg1,

i know i'm not exactly comparing apples to apples, but i believe the k&n filter i bought for my atv came pre-oiled. i think that it's just not that easy to tell, because they don't over oil it. i was always prone to over-oil mine just for the reassurance that it might catch more dirt. but like i said, that's for an atv...not a 4runner
