sluggish, poor aceleration after rebuild

Ok, finally after 265,000 miles on the old engine, I went ahead an replaced the engine with a rebuilt one, also did a new clutch while in there. The engine runs and sounds great, but it feels like I'm pulling a trailer when I drive it, I re-adjusted the valves one more time, checked the timing, it got a little better but it's still sluggish, is this the way is supposed to feel after a rebuild? any ideas? one more thing, I put headers on it but left the old original muffler on it. Thanks

Does it feel worse than before the motor rebuild? I assume you had issues with it previous to the rebuild to spark the interest of the rebuild itself....just looking to get more background.

engine was running fine before rebuild it just had poor compression on 1 cylinder. Now it runs great when idle and sounds good, it just has poor aceleration, very sluggish feeling when driving

with headers its not going to make a difference weither u keep ur stock muffler on or not. what motor is this u rebuilt? i am going to assume how u typed headers that you have the 3.0. when you rebuilt ur motor did u replace-plugs,wires,cap,rotor,tstat(what temp is ur tstat and what brand)

I did replace plugs, cables, rotor, cap. tstat it's like 4 months old, I guess I'll do a compression test. Engine is a "crate" 22RE. like I said, it runs great on idle, and sounds very good. But feels kinda like if I had the handbrake on while accelerating

Kinda thinking like 934rnr but...
... cam timing, not distributor.
It's running out of power at higher RPM, no? so maybe the cam is advanced a tooth?

being a long block I would think the chain was put right and didn't even check it when I got it, thanks for your suggestion, lots of good pointers on things to check out. I'll check the cam tomorrow.

before you get into checking cam timing, make sure idle is 750 rpms (+- 25) and your ignition timing is set...
and make sure you do it with the diagnostic jumper in place...
what year again?

ok running better but the acceleration it's still not all great, I know I got a small exhaust leak, will this affect the acceleration?. I re-adjusted the valves for the third time, now they are nice and quiet. checked the cam/timing chain it's all good, timing is good. Thanks

I have the same issue...Changed head gasket and cam with 268 engnbdlr. I made sure the Chain did not slip and kept the cam in time with the crank. I seem to have the ignition timing about right. Advance it until it chatters and back it off??? After all this still a bit sluggish.

Mine finally coded, it was the knock sensor...again. I replaced it once with a used one. I took the replacement out and smacked it with a wrench and put it back in and it's doing much better now!!! I guess I'll have to change it again soon though.

I also just put a brand new crate engine in.. (22RE) and it is also sluggish.. checked the timing 3 times.. but i have never crossed the diagnostic box.... what does that do? and i have some serios valve chatter

When you set the timing you do have to jump the diag box. Once this is set you'll need to set the timing about 5 degrees.
Originally I timed my to ear and it was a bit off. I did it like the old style, advance till it pings and then turn it back. I still have a bit of valve tap but I think i need to readjust the exhaust, something tells me that #3 just is not quite right.

Not sure what that means.
I have a 22re in mine and it'll rev up to 5k+ all day long. Actually kind of funny seeing the looks on the faces of the guys with the 2/3rz's look at me when I pass them ('cause I'm not afraid of revving it up). 75 in 3rd gear is no stranger to my 88 22re.

5K I don't like the way mine sounds at 4K let alone 5. I Maybe I'm wrong but isn't 5 a bit high for the 22re? I'd really like to know. I have also seen a some specks on these and they seem to get the most HP and torque around 3800. Is this correct. So really you don't need to rev that high. Grab another gear and let her fly!!
