Ok I aquired a parts truck recently and decided to swap the diffs to get a better gear. I was told they were 4.88's but I counted the teeth on the rear (which I swapped first) and it was 4.10 . I put it in and proceeded to put it in 4by, well long story short it wasn't a 4.10. Nothing broke but it gave me an excuse to change the front. While swapping I noticed the front crown gear had numbers on it but none of them said what ratio it was. Yes I could've just counted the teeth but that didn't work last time. So here's the numbers: 82-0532-1 G9 8620 RICHMOND. I've emailed Richmond gear many time but no response. Can anyone help?

 

I guess I don't understand what you're asking... You counted teeth and calculated 4.10, but that wasn't right?

Counting teeth is by far the most foolproof way to tell what gears you have... as long as you don't miss-count or make a mistake when you're dividing the numbers, that is.

 

What gears did you have in your rig to begin with?

Ok so you counted and came up with a ratio of 4.10:1? You swapped it into the rear even though it wasn't the 4.88 gear set you wanted and proceeded to put it into 4x4. I'm guessing you have 4.10's already but from your post it sounds like you had a "pop" or strain or something that told you that the rear you just put in isn't a 4.10???? Am I following you so far?

When you did the count how many teeth were on the ring gear and pinon? How many times did you count? When I did my gear swap I counted mine like a half dozen times just to be sure. You don't want to have different ratios front and rear.

 

Ok I ran that part number off of the Richmond site and came up with a gear ratio of 3.9. Was that part number on the ring gear or the pinion?

edit: Yeah I transposed a couple of numbers there. The 82-0532-1 doesn't exist on this site. I typed in 82-0523-1 and it came up with 3.9.

Get a grease pen and mark the gear teeth as soon as you count them. You cannot get the wrong ratio with this method.

The first "4.56 diff" I bought was actually a 4.10, the seller took care of it though.

 

Sorry so late but if any one reads this this morning a 4.88 ring has 39 teeth and the pinion has 8 that makes 4.88 gears other than that I have no clue I only know that cause I just bought a set of sierra gears for my rig and they are stamped 8x39 and yes I counted them several times

 

I counted the teeth on the rear before I put it in and it was 4.10's, which my truck already had but I wanted to get rid of the welded diff so I put it in. I guess I counted the teeth wrong cause When I put it in 4by it started to steer funny and I had to smack the shifter hard to get it into 2wd(this was all on snow by the way). Now with the front diff out of the truck I pulled the rear from everything is fine.

 

so which one is not 4.10? The original or the new ones you put in? Did you count teeth on the gear sets you took out of your truck? Maybe it wasn't 4.10 to begin with...

 

I tried to serch on Richmonds website but the part number doesn't come up in the search.

 

the ones that came out were 4.10. I know the ones I put in are lower because I picked up alot of power and I can cruise on the highway in 5th now.

Anyways, if you're still trying to figure out what you installed in your truck, and you don't want to take the 3rds off again to count teeth (understandably), just follow the procedure that I described in this thread. You'll at least be able to figure out what you have in there now, but again, it involves counting, so you may be out of luck... JK

 

If you really counted 41 teeth then 4.56 is the only other ratio that has 41 teeth. Those gears have the double diamond on them....made in the 1980's and 90's.

 

Yes they do have the double diamond on them. So are they good gears, just wondering cause they stopped making them. I was hoping for 4.88's but beggers can't be choosers. Lol Thanks Zuk

 

Ya, they are good gears.....as long as they were set up properly in the first place. I would imagine the CBPL is pretty low. It would help quite a bit in the re-newed strength area if you removed the 3rd and tightened the adjuster wheels on each side 3 or 4 turns (exactly the same amount on each side).
