I have a 89 toyota pick up with a V6 3vze and cannot locate my Intake Air Control Valve. Are there any alternative names for this valve? I've looked up many resources online and went through all my manuals to no avail. Can somebody post/reply with a pic/site/schematics....anything would be a big help. thanks.

It seems very primitive to me compared to other IAC valves.

 

The 3VZ IAC valve is PART of the throttle body. You cannot replace JUST the IAC on the 3VZ. Sorta silly like that. There will indeed be coolant lines running in and out of it.

 

Is it really an IAC valve (electronically controlled by the ECU) or is it simply heat activated for cold idle purposes? (more like a choke only) I would like to know for sure.

It is under the throttle body, has two coolant lines: one from the engine and another to return coolant as well as air passages, built into the mounting.

It operates much like the Auxillary Air Valve, or Air Bypass Valve, from Bosch K/J Jetronic injection systems where it has two ports connected, one fore and one aft, of the throttle plates and is temperature controlled. Where the Bosch systems used electric signals to heat the valve and cause it to close as the engine warmed up, the Toyota system is heated by coolant flow. Arguably more accurate, or at least more representative of the engine temperature.

I think its a good system- you hardly ever hear about the valve failing on Toyotas and as Abe pointed out, coolant temp is pretty damn representative of engine temp. I just replaced a Idle Air Control on a Ford Ranger with about 100K. I spoke with the junk yard guy and he said that IAC fails on tonnes of Fords. Ford uses an electric solenoid instead of the mechanical system used my Toyota. The Ford usually gums up, or the solenoid dies in pretty short order.

 

The Ford IAC valve is not the same as on a Toyota. The Ford IAC is computer controlled & changes idle speed whenever it needs to be adjusted. The Toyota valve is only for cold start up. Totally different all together. It seems to more along the lines of a choke for cold start up only. The Ford IAC actually controls the Idle where as the Toyota relies on the bleed screw sorta like a carburetor. They both get the job done but are not the same at all.
