92 4x4 Advise on purchase

Help!!!

I am very close to purchasing a new truck and have located a

92 Toyota 4x4 63,000 original miles
4 cyl 22re engine
5 speed manual

link http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/in...0&cardist=5657

Everything else is about as basic as it gets. No ac, no power windows or locks.

I am planning on having an independent mechanic look it over first but it is for sale at a small town lot a few hours away.
What kinds of mechanical issues should i be looking out for and what kinds of maintenance and or repairs should I expect. I have read that the timing chain needs to be replaced between 80-130k. Would this be sooner since the truck is 16years old. Any other advise would be greatly appreciated. Also the price is $5,900. This seems cheaper than most similar toyotas so just wondering if this price is good or too good to be true. Again, any advise before purchasing would help. I'm pretty set on a toyota and really want 4x4 so low mileage tacomas are probably out of my price range.
Thanks!!

Nice looking truck -- lots of bucks, in my opinion. But, if it's close to perfect shape and you can verify the mileage, in the big scheme of things, 6K is not too much to spend on a really good ride. As long as you're willing to spend a couple bucks to have it inspected by a mechanic, you might want to spend a couple on a Carfax report. Unfortunately, not every vehicle has regular entries that show up, but you might find some reports of vehicle inspections from through the years to get a feel for that mileage figure. There are low mileage vehicles around, but 63,000 in 17 years is not much.

Thanks man, The guy is supposed to get back to me with the carfax. What should i be looking out for as far as repair type stuff goes. If i spend all of my $ on the truck i probably wont have money to sink into any problems so are there common things that will need to be done to this engine? I have read alot about the 22re and the main advantage, reliability, seems to outweigh the main drawback, low power. Any other advise on this engine?

If it were an extended cab I could justify the price...but there is just such little room in the single cabs..... I'd pay $5K for it.

Have the mechanic check for a leaky rear main seal and broken timing chain guides, as these are common. It would also be good for him to check the compression or do a leak down test.

I recently got a 93 4x4 22re 5-speed as my first truck, and it does lack power. There are a few hills on my daily commute that that I have trouble keeping up with the speed limit, mostly in hilly areas. Despite the lack of power, I love driving this truck, and even take it out over my 200hp RWD sports car.

It really depends on your driving style, and what you want the vehicle for, whether the lack of power will matter much to you.

thanks,
the use would be driving around asheville nc
room mate has a jeep, we rarely need the 4x4 but when we do it is essential, would probably use it to haul kayaks and such, maybe a topper shell but i would rarely be hauling anything heavy
my commute is less than 3 miles. how are these on the interstate? i will definitely be traveling in it some. Again thanks for the comments
btw my current car, which is consequently on its last limb, is a 2.0 jetta. probably 115hp would the power be that much less?

in good condition, for 3rd gens, the factory hp output at the flywheel on a 22re is 116hp at 4800 rpm, and 132(?) ft/lbs of torque at 3800 rpm. Maybe its 2800, cant remember. My '93 weighed 3863lbs according to the title and registration. Still, it could pull. Before the clutch started to go, I could easily reach 90 mph, and top off at 96 mph when i still had the 235/75r15s on it. with the 31's and stock gears, I could get 90 on a long downhill with a tailwind. it still pulled great though. IMO, you'll have no problem keeping up with traffic, and you'll love the sound of these engines at WOT

what mileage did the clutch go? I replaced one in my jetta and it wasn't cheap. Wouldn't think the clutch or tranny would come into play at 62k miles but i guess that is assuming normal driving which may or may not be the case.

uuhhm. around 148K miles. I have no idea if it was the original one or not, as there were like 5 service records (from me) when I sold it. Im assuming it was the original. I've heard $300-$500 for a clutch installed at a shop is average/good price. but yeah, you shouldnt have to worry about it. and I did drive my truck pretty hard on the road.
A few guys on here have the original clutch at like 250K+ miles....

thanks thats what i want to hear. hope it is still available in a week or so when i get everything ready to purchase.

Do you know how much bigger than stock those rims and tires are? I know if you go bigger you need to look at stuff like gearing? etc. I can tell they are a little bigger than stock but are they big enough to need to make any other changes to the truck?

I would say either 30x9.5 or 31x10.5 tires.

Mine with 31x10.5 BFG a/ts to compare

Yea, the tires look close. The trucks are pretty similar. I am assuming that your truck is not lifted? are there any changes that you have made? besides the obvious rollbar

yup yup. everything is stock except for the tires, rims (which came with the truck) and the roll bar, which I took off after 6 months of use.
