anyone have experience with kwan tanabe motors in LA?

a guy at work was tellin me bout them, says id prob be able to get a super low mileage 22re and tranny for around 500 bucks from them WITH warranty. however, everything i found about them is on some kind of Honda forum. do they offer toyota truck motors and 4x4 trannys? and if so, are they any good? if i can get a low mileage motor AND tranny for 500 or so then ill definitely get the motor and put a cam in it. a lot cheaper than rebuilding mine, which has been beat to hell. any thoughts?

I googled kwantanabe and found, like you, that most of the stuff on the 'net was about Hondas... there was one thread about an MR2 and some about 350z's. What I gathered was that they import used JDM engines. If that's the case- good luck getting a real 22re from them as, IIRC, the 22r/re was never used in Japan.

I got my 7MGE from them and picked it up at a warehouse they have in Norfolk VA (when I was living down there). Since I was picking it up in person, I got to choose from several that they had on hand - all had new platinum plugs, steam cleaned and comp tested. I didn't have any problems at all and would buy another engine from them with no worries.

I know they had a V8 nissan motor and quite a few other Toyota and Honda motors (in VA, but that was nearly 3 years ago), best bet is to give them a call - if they don't have one on hand, they might be able to get one.

those used engines come from japan where they are not alloud to put over 30,000 miles on there cars engines, so they ship em to the USA and we ( consumers ) buy and run them in our cars. its a good idea to change the head gasket if you buy an engine from them, as I've heard they dont use high quality HG'S on engine made to run for 50,000 miles or less. just my $0.02
