getting out of 4wd

getting out of 4wd
I tested out 4wd today in the icey conditions. After I got on roads that weren't slick and icey, I tried to take it out of 4wd. I couldnt get it out. I moved and jiggled the stick around as much as I could and couldn't find my way out of 4wd. I unlocked the hubs and put it in 4wd high I think, and it popped and I was able to remove it from 4wd and put it in the neutral position.
I dont know what did it, but is there a way or a trick you guys know to remove the 4wd easier than this?

were you stopped when you tried to take it out of 4wd? Sometimes mine doesnt like to pop out unless Im rolling forward, or driving under 55mph. ( you shouldn't shift into or out of 4wd over 55mph.) if you were driving, try pushing in the clutch and taking it out of gear then do the t-case lever.

I was stopped. I wasn't sure if it was safe to engage and disengage 4wd when the truck was rolling. Is it safe?
I was stopped when I took it out of gear and I did have the clutch in. I was rolling forward when it popped. After the pop I stopped immediately to make sure everything was okay and tried removing the 4wd again. THe pop made it so I can disengage the 4wd.

Yes it should be safe. I've always engaged and disengaged the 4wd at speeds up to 55mph with no ill effects thus far. You have manual locking hubs correct? If you have the Auto hubs ( not ADD) then you need to do what a4runnerfreak said and go into reverse a little.

I almost always swtich 2H-4H and back in motion. Best to be moving straight ahead (or back) and don't be accelerating or decelerating. Then just ease off the gas pedal and push the lever into 2H and it should pop right into gear. Problem is the drivetrain can bind up if you are in 4WD and making turns, or if you had one or more tires spinning, etc. The wheels all travel different speeds and that makes the gear or chain driven transfer case get bound up.
