the blocks arent the same, If it was an 86 22r block you would be ok, but nope.

no i was fishing around on the LCE site and found this http://www.lcengineering.com/technot...4eca66de894c03
it says that the blocks are the same from 85 to 95 for 22r and 22re. myth or fact?

i just now called LCE and if the 85 motor has the "laser" casting identifier then it will work but if not its actually an older block used in the 85's to exaust stock of the older blocks.

According to that site it looks like you would be okay! But you will have to change the head out too! Good luck!

the block and cylinder head changed at the end of 1984. all the blocks are the same after that (make sure you have the turbo oil return boss - "laser block"). use your 22re head on top of the 22r block and you'll do just fine, the only diff with the 22r is the cylinder head port shape - I've built several engines from "scrap" so I just might have a clue

The red circle shows where the oil return from the turbo would go, as mentioned above the 'laser' block.

If it happens to be the 'laser' block, the head should not be a problem. With the change in the block in 84-85, the cylinder head changed as well. But the if the 22r block is the 85+ 'laser' block, the head is mostly the same between the 22r and the 22re. The late 22r heads have the same rectangular intake ports as the 22re. You may mave to relocate a stud or two in the head for the intake though as the carb'd intake changed a little over the years. You'll have to block off the fuel pump mount (use the plate from the 22re engine). You can remove the fuel pump eccentric from the cam, just be sure to install the washer from the 22re cam.

If worse comes to worse, you know you'll be replacing the engine and will need the 22re intake gaskets anyways, so go buy them. Then take the gasket and put it on the head and make sure all the intake and coolant passages are completely surrounded by the gasket and there are no gaps between the ports and the gasket. Don't worry if the intake gasket has more 'bolt holes' than the head has provisions for. As I mentioned, there were some differences and the gasket was made to cover them all.

the block/head change is considered as an 85 model year change (so scuba's even off a year there), but it's possible to have an 85 with the earlier (considered 84) block and head since, as mentioned, it was a 'running change' and production continued, and used up the older 84 style inventory.

Well the 22r block has the "micky mouse" things so I think I'm safe.
