auto trans, any good?

my pop is looking for a rig. right now he's looking at a jeep wrangler:/ and a '88 toyota 4runner which has the 3.0 V6 and an auto trans. now i know that the 3.0's have a rough track record but own one myself and am happy with it.

i'm just not sure about the auto trans. any input about them?

True, it does make the 3.0 more of a dog than a m/t, but you can live with it. I've got 1 that has 268K on it, and still runs damn strong.

Get the gearing right and the 3.0 auto is nice. (5.71s with 33" tires, 5.29s w/ 31" tires)

Thats true, forgot 'bout that. I'm stuck with the stock 4.56's for awhile, but will be keeping my 31's. Was either thinking 4.88's or the 5.71's, if I ever decide to run a 33" tire....

An auto sure is nice when you're rock crawling or sitting in traffic.

Nothing wrong with the autos from a reliability standpoint on unmodified rigs. Start adding bigger tires and regearing and an auxiliary tranny cooler are ESSENTIAL. As mtngoat pointed out, the practical limit for a highway driven rig with an auto is 33's, since 5.71's are the lowest gears available.

Note that the "problem" with the automatic is not first gear - it's the MONSTER overdrive, so the problems are not in city driving or 'wheeling, but in highway driving.

Gas mileage and power are MUCH worse with the auto. I would say >90% of the people who really complain about the power of the 3.0 have automatics.

lovin the input, thanks alot!

so my pop and i test drove the '88 V6 auto 4runner today and everything was good on it except the 4 wheel drive. the front driver hub isn't engaging and it didn't seem like it was going into 4 wheel low. is this normal for automatics? the gearing seemed the same for high and low.

is it not going into 4 wheel low, or is this normal?

Might not be - the automatics use a linkage system to shift - could be out of adjustment.

Whats the specs on the jeep?
Ive had both a 1980cj5 w 350/350 auto i built, a 1994 yj and my 1997 4 runner. Whats your dad going to do with it?
I use mine to hunt in, haul the baby , drive to work ,trailride and go on mountain trips.
My jeeps were never that well rounded, without adding a bunch of racks, and a hard top to lock up stuff
