88 4runner, 3.0, hard to start when cold

I searched around quite a bit.
It seems to be 1 of three things from what i have read

1) cold start injector(what the hell is this?)
2) Cold start injection timer
3) Fuel pump/fuel leak.

When cold(such as first start in the am, or after sitting all day at work(its only in the 30's outside) the truck will crank and crank, than it will start to run before finally cranking over. To me this sounds as if i am not getting fuel on the cold start. I read of people saying they tested the first 2 parts on my list, but i dont know how to do that. Can anyone pass along some guidance. Also, does anyone have an idea on where to start looking for fuel leaks(perhaps common spots)

Cold Start Injector on the PS of the upper intake. Its easy to pull it and clean it. If that doesn't work, then replace the Cold Start Time Switch on the back of the motor.

Are you the new owner of that 4runner I assume? Its been sold a couple time in the last two months.

yes i am. the original owner sold it to a guy who was looking to flip it. I traded my 74 bronco for it.

Its however been nothing but a problem, leaking t-case, timing belt broke after 65 miles, cruise quit working, now this....

and the location of the CSI Time switch scanned from my FSM. Follow the red line


The CSI is located on the passenger side of the intake, directly above where the EGR bolts to the intake. If you need, I can scan that page outta my FSM for you.

cold start

If the timing belt broke and it was replaced, I would check the timing. If timing is a little off either way it will crank real slow or real fast.

i checked the timing when i installed the belt, as part of a timing belt install procedure.
This just started yesterday, out of the blue. the truck has about 600 miles on it since the install.

I hear you. The 3.0L is an electrical nightmare. One more this to check would be the ignitor. Mine was bad on my 3.0L when I got it and it would leave me stranded when hot sometimes. The ignitor would overheat and shut it down, and it wouldn't start at all.

Have you tried the full pump jumper to make sure its at least getting fuel?

I spent the better part of a month chasing my issues down, and I am very good with a multimeter and turning a wrench.
