I spent all day cleaning these. What a mess! And.. the axle (buried in mud and grease) right after I brought it home and a few hours later.

I would start a write up on this thing now but I would bore everyone silly with the cleaning process. The majority of Yotatechers know what a filthy SA looks like anyway.

Its been nice up here the past few days. I was building a little work place to keep on top of this SA but the sun has been out so I have been working on it outside.
I was getting kinda lonely being the only Humboldt person on here lol

 

Parts washers are $80.00 from Harber Freight. Buy one, use it, then sell it if you don't have the room.

You did clean up those knuckles!!!

i got a big container, filled it up with Super Purple degreaser (i think thats what its called) and let it soak for a little. Then rinsed and wiped down all the parts and painted some things.

Still haven't gotten my axle back together all the way though. Still need to find a matching 5.29 front diff and a welder to weld the gussets on.

 

I went down to Renner Petroleum the other day and bought 4 gallons of mineral spirits for like $25.00!
I thought the $6.00 a gallon for that stuff was kinda steep but it works! It also stinks to high hell.
Tomorrow I am going to start cutting stuff off the axle. I don't have a torch at my house so it is Sawzall city!!

 

Oh yes cutting stuff off! I can't wait till i get to cut the ifs stuff off! lol

I bought a 4" angle grinder, and some cutoff wheels. Cut all the uncessary brackets off and cleaned everything up. I received my Marlin knuckle gussets so now its gonna be time to cut off another couple brackets and get it ready for paint. Man i need a welder! lol

That axle looks great!
I wish mine looked like that. Mine was so covered with grease and sand you couldn't quite tell it was a Solid axle ahhahhaha. I had to take a 1 1/4" chisel for 2 hrs and scrape away all the grease and sand. Now its starting to look like it has some life to it.

lol! im done with the pics until i get a welder to weld the upper truss and knuckle gussets on. then i can paint and reassemble it. Im not even going to put my Birfs back in untill i can get a 5.29 third for the front. I don't want to mess up the seals.

Mine was dirty too. I went to lowes and got a wire wheel that attaches to a drill. Used that all over the axle. Then the angle grinder and then painted it up.

Good luck with yours! Whats it going under? Which kit you plan on using? Etc...

Btw, Toyospearo, everything i have so far is marlin. The HD seals are completely worth it IMO, look at the difference on my thread.

 

Yes a fellow Humboldt county wheeler!! Do you know of any good wheeling spots? Also if you need a hand with your SAS just give me a shout and if I have some free time I'll lend a hand. I know how bad it is to do the SAS all by yourself. I to still have some minor things left like brakes, shocks, and plasma cutting of the remaining I.F.S. brackets. Here are some pics for motivation

hey, i just started taking my axle apart and cleaning it. any pointers? don't have a parts washer or sand blaster:/

 

Pressure washer cleans up an axle in no time. Hit it once and wash off all the layers of dirt/crud then use a degreaser or parts washer. Much faster.

If you don't own a pressure washer, spend $1.50 and go to one of those car wash places.

Just make sure to hold onto the smaller pieces so they dont't go rolling.

 

Mine wasn't super dirty to begin with so the pressure washer at the carwash didn't do much. I spent some time with a wire wheel and brake cleaner and paper towels.
