Can a W56 handle chevy 4.3?

Can the W56 in my 88 4Runner handle the power of a Chevy 4.3? I am considering possibly doing this swap and want to keep a manual transmission. And this seems the easiest/cheapest way.

it will.... at first. my guess is that if you like to pop the clutch and take off quick, then no it wont last. but if you drive it nice and easy, then you SHOULD be ok. keyword: should. the w56 is only designed to handle 150hp MAX. keep that in mind as well. id try to get a manual tranny from a toyota V8 and find the bellhousing for it.

I don't think there has ever been a Toyota V8 with a manual trans behind it.

Whats the HP have to do with it? Shouldnt it be torque and the shock load of dumping clutch with about 250 lbs/ft torque that will kill the tranny? I would think if I ease on the power then mash actuator after rolling it should be ok. At least thats my theory. And for what its worth Northwest Off-Road seems to think: "If you use the extra power sensibly the stock transmission and axle will last and perform properly." Of course of some reason they also think I need a minimum of 4" suspension lift and a body lift if I want to take a Chevy powered 4Runner off road.

Call Advance dapters for any adapter and combo info and parts. They are great to work with. I would go with someting stong enough to handle it I have done a swap and tried to work around a weak link tranny. Its no fun driving around it. You will end up doing it twice and that gets expensive. I didnt have to buy a adapter my first time, but the project was done twice and fixed bullet proof(well alsmost). the second time. Call advance get a book and read up on it. Sounds like you could go 4.3, man tranny from a S10 and get an adapter from it to the yota transf case.

Neither easy or cheap. Don't forget you need more than just the adapter itself. Add up the flywheel, clutch, slave, etc, and then see how cheap it is. I was able to score a TH350 rebuilt cheaper than the added price of all the parts.

After wheeling for years with a manual, I think a auto is going to be a nice change.

I didnt see an adapter from Chevy manual to toyota T-Case from advance adapter. I think the small chevy trucks had t5 or nv3550 5 speeds. But I guess I can give 'em a call since they are only a couple hours away from me.

Ya but I want the overdrive, and the deeper 1st gear. Ive wheeled in autos and a manual Jeep. I like driving the 5 speed, and just figured since Im a manual already it would be easiest to stay manual.

If you want overdrive, just run the automatic out of the S10. It has a lower first gear. You then get to mess with an electric transmission, new driveshafts, crossmember, VSS ETC.

If you want a manual you need to switch to a R-series. Prepare to spend some dough. Most of the GM manual transmissions will have the stick coming out under the stereo, without major modifications.

If you want easy, TH350 no driveline mods, crossmember in stock location. transmits more power to the ground. TOUGH! no electronics to mess with. oh, and CHEAP!

or you can spend $1000 in adapters and extras to bolt to you W56 and never use the extra power that will be had with the 4.3 and eventually end up doing it twice.

X2 what i said earlier. Go ahead and try to take the known weak link out of the build. Build it once the have fun finding unkown weak links. Dont start with one and have to do it and spend $$$$ twice to get it right.
The guys at Advance Adapt are cool to work with.
The 4.3 with a turbo 350 would be sweet.
