coil springs

I was wondering what coil springs cost for my 91' Runner. It is not something I can do, but I want to fix the drooping rear end. I am assuming new springs would do it. I know dealers are "expensive," but it is the place I trust. I am the 3rd owner of this vehicle over its life span, and it was originally purchased new at said dealer. Anyway, what is a reasonable price for this?

Thanks.

Although I can't help you with a price I can ask a question. Why do you feel you can't do it yourself? You might be able to pick up a set of springs from another model out of a junk yard and swap them in at home.

I picked up a set of Moog springs a couple of weeks ago for $89.00 at O'reillys. I agree with Junkers88, do it yourself. Do a search, lots of good info here.

What kind of specialty tools do I need? I suppose I need a jack of some type, but I suppose the one I have to change tires would work. Basically, I don't trust my life mechanical knowledge...So if I could do it myself, it is not expensive.

Thanks...

Believe it or not working on these vehicles is easier than you think. Depending on what you're doing you'll need a jack to pick up the rig, two jack stands to support the frame so you can let the suspension droop as far as it can and a coil spring compressor tool to collapse the coils so you can get them out and the new ones in. Take your time, do some research, take your time with the install and by all means BE SAFE! Trust me on this. I bought my rig as my first ever Toyota build and have learned to regear, install a locker, add coils, diagnose problems and fix them and am about to do a ball joint lift and driveway alignment, all from what I have learned here. Take your time, save some money and teach what you have learned. We've all been where you are right now, no worries.

If you're mechanically inclined, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, a garage should charge more than 1-1½ hours to swap 'em in for you.
  • Remove lower shock mounts
  • Jack up truck on the frame
  • Axle will drop away from springs
  • Remove springs & Replace
  • Reinstall.

If you're doing it in your driveway, do one side at a time. And be careful not to stretch the brake line!. You could damage it internally, and a failure could be deadly.

I want to change the rear springs on my 95 SR5 as well. I asked at the local rental place about spring compressors, they said they had "internal" and "external" compressors. Which one would be best for the 4Runner coils?
The shocks are all that needs to be disconnected, you don't have to take any of the suspension apart? Mine looks pretty rusted. I snapped a sway bar link on my front end changing the axles, I don't want to repeat that stunt in the rear.

You wish Matt, that is my friends place just up the road from here. And since that pic i have obviously changed the apperance on my truck ALOT! But i have to say i really really miss using that solid chrome plated bush bar. it goes well with the chrome plated bumper and grille. But im saving for an ARB.
