can i shorten my own d shaft?

i had a d shaft lenghtened after my sas but i changed the springs to something a little lower in the front this past weekend.now i need about 1.5 inches taken out of this shaft.can i do this myself?i have acess to a machine shop and a welder but i donmt think i can fit the shaft tube in our lathe.

You will need to machine off the weld, then shorten the tube, and reweld the assy.

If you have never done it before, just take it to a shop. Its pretty cheap insurance not to break it on the trail.

if i cut the tube to the length i need then i can chuck it on the splined end and machine it off.

Just make sure the cut is exactly straight, otherwise your driveline will wobble. You also need to find a way to balance the shaft, so you don't have vibration issues.

i posted this at lunchtime and now its breaktime at work.ive already got it done.i dont know how straight it is but it pressed in tight so im assuming its good.its a front shaft anyways

I would have recommended you just cut off the splines so it will compress further.

ok i knew this all went together too easy.
i just put the slipyoke on and tried to align it(phasing i think its called)i cant get it perfectly lined up with the fixed yoke at the other end.its very close.is this gonna give me problems?i guess i should have put the slipyoke on the splined end and then pressed it together.
